You may find me going through the Server Support and Server Administration forums quite often (although I haven't been doing so as much lately due to time restrictions). As you may already know, the volume of questions that we receive here is large, and along with many new questions, we also get a lot of redundant ones.
Our tutorials section has been lackluster, to put it nicely. I've been wanting to improve on it for a long time, and I think I have some motivation to do so right now. Because of this, what tutorials would you like to see? Off the top of my head, here's a few:
Basic YAML formatting.
PermissionsEx and GroupManager file setup (text tutorial, no video)
Common and uncommon errors
"What plugin is this, what plugin is that?" directory.
Essentials kits tutorial (so many people seem to have issues with this).
Diagnosing and finding causes of server lag.
Basic and advanced error troubleshooting.
That's what I have so far. Please post any others that you have in mind.
Possibly a tutorial on setting up a basic Enjin site and donation store? Or maybe a tutorial on how to make a website/forum site? They can be quite useful for someone who doesn't know much about websites.
There could be also a tutorial/info guide on server hosting. This would include things such as how to choose the right host, how to choose the right plan for your server.
And are you going to be writing all the tutorials by yourself? Or are they going to be community-sourced?
1. I'd probably go with a free forum platform like phpBB or SMF, since Enjin is easy in the first place and it's very overused.
2. Good idea. Will do.
3. Written by me. If anyone else wants to contribute, they're welcome to do so.
There isn't much I personally need to see since I kinda self taut myself through every error I got. however here are some things I see a lot coming up that you haven't mentioned.
- Bungee config / error troubleshooting
- Agreeing with Mineaddiction hosting choice's choose a good host (NOT MCPRO unless you're sponsored by them because they are really overpriced)
There was a staff choosing tutorial on the old MC forums before the new design but I haven't seen it since the new update.
I'll setup a how to hire and staff choosing tomorrow!!
I'm unsure if this would go in this section, but how about having tips to getting a server noticed?
I've ran small servers in the past (talking around 2011) and had no issue getting a stable playerbase going. Lately, though, I can't help but see not just my own, but numerous servers struggling for players, and I think the server market in general has become increasingly competitive in the past year, leaving smaller servers struggling.
Yes, it's a grind to get players. There are a lot more servers now than there were 3 years ago. It seems many people are having lots of success renting out sponsored slots on server lists (there are some sites where top bidders take the ads and lease them out by the hour), and I'm considering doing that myself right now. Servers require a lot more startup funds than they did 3 years ago, for sure.

I might setup how to choose the right host as people seem to still use MCProHosting which I really think is overrated.

I'll definitely write up a guide on this as well.
