We had a Bukkit 1.7.9 server, serving a few worlds. I changed it over to now just be a vanilla 1.8 server, (several, actually) serving the same world files (well, I trimmed them a bit in MCEdit). Everything seems to work.... except two things:
1) The sounds and animation for opening a chest don't play for anyone. Many other sounds like doors and footsteps play, so I'm sure it isn't that sound is broken on the clients. I even wiped both the 1.8 download and all resources on my client, watch them all re-download, and they still don't work there.
2) As mod, if I do /time set 0 then while the world acts like it is morning... it is still visually dark outside.
If I /playsound random.chestopen Zarf_V ~ ~ ~ 1 the sound plays just fine.
If I create a new world with the server, then chest open/close plays fine when I open or close the chest.
In the world where they don't play, if I go to a new chunk (one created by the 1.8 server), and add a chest... still doesn't play.
So I conclude that sound in my client is fine, and that the server can even tell my client to play those sounds. The only place they don't play is when I'm in a world that was migrated to 1.8 from 1.7.9.
It may or may not be important, but that 1.7.9 world was previously served via Bukkit.
Other oddities: /time set 0 seems to set the time (mobs burn, and don't spawn on the surface...) but the sky is still full of stars. This seems to sometimes happen after waking up from sleep... but I think I read that was a known 1.8 problem.
My worlds can from a Bukkit server with the My_Worlds plug in. We had about half a dozen worlds and their associated Nether and End worlds.
Turns out that in this configuration the playerdata/*.dat files had a NBT Dimension value of 17! (See Player.dat format; the normal legal values are -1, 0, and 1.) For reasons that are unclear to me, this odd dimension value caused some sounds not to play, and setting time to fail to update the sky in the client. Bizarre!
The fix was easy: Go to the Nether, and come right back!

Anyone else see this or know how to fix?
