don't know if this helps, but it got my little bro's computer to play nicely with mine. (and now that Mojang is owned by Microsoft, it kind of makes sense.) but make sure that all the computers that are trying to lan game together, are on the same homegroup/workgroup (provided they are all windows. if you are on mac, I'm no help at all.)
Same here. 1.8 LAN doesn't work at all. No firewall is up, and we are both in the same home network. It doesn't show up at all when either me or my brother start up LAN.
Emailed Mojang support and they were not helpful at all

After fighting with this issue myself I have found the cause and the fix.
The cause is that Windows Firewall on the client side is blocking the connection to Mojang's authentication servers.
The fix is to either disable your windows firewall or to allow hosts 50.19.211.59 and 23.21.123.163.
An easy way to do this is to open a command prompt as administrator and run the following commands.
**Note: I live in Texas, I'm not sure how complex Mojang's authentication server infrastructure is. IP address may very based on geographical location.

where did you get the authentication ips from. you know the stuff we have to allow through the fire wall. This part: "windows firewall or to allow hosts 50.19.211.59 and 23.21.123.163"<~~~~~were did you get the
I would prefer going back to 1.7+ until they fix this which sucks because of all the new things added but what worked best for my sister and I was going back to 1.7.10
My bro and I finally got it to work. You need to allow the Java Binary thing in your firewall. It does work, for 1.8 and 1.8.1 and maybe other versions

We get the:
"java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: no further information:"
Any ideas?
1) create a game in 1.7.10
1) open to LAN to make sure it works
3) restart in 1.8
4) put down something from 1.8 (not sure if that is actually needed but...)
5) then save and quit
6) log on to the game again
7) Then open to LAN you should be able to play 1.8 on LAN....
At least that worked for me.
My sister and I love playing on LAN, but when we try to connect, it won't even show any LANs. Please help.
