My friend & I have had a Minecraft server for us to play on for about 3 months & the only complication was the firewall blocked java (New PC), which was quickly fixed & has been working flawlessly until 2 days ago.
When we updated server to 1.8, it worked fine for a while, & recently out of the blue neither of us can connect. When viewed in the multiplayer menu in-game the server keeps pinging, & if you tried to connect it says you timed out with no further information. Its not the EULA & the firewall didn't take java off public again (I checked). I should also mention we are using hamachi to connect to server. Any help is much appreciated.
I'm getting this exact same error trying to connect to a machine on my local network. And the machine on the network that is hosting the server cannot connect using localhost, they get the same error message. Anyone have any ideas? Until we updated to 1.8 today we had no issues.
also if that doesnt work click on the windows butten and type cmd then in command prompt type ipconfig and then look at default gateway and use that ip like this

If the server is hosted on the same computer as you are playing from, use "localhost" (or "127.0.0.1", they are the same thing)
If you cannot connect using localhost then something is wrong with the server itself. Remember the server has to be running for it to work.

For us localhost isn't working on the host machine, we've re-downloaded the server client several times. Any idea what could be wrong?

If localhost doesn't work on the same computer as the server is running from.....
Either the server is broken, or some antivirus/firewall is blocking minecraft server to itself xP
If it happens again you should check the ipv4 and change the ip in the properties to that also if you are using your default gateway or ipv4 address to log on to your OWN server make sure it is up to date
whenever I have that problem I forget to make sure my own ip for my own server is up to date so really keep it in mind!

OK I am sort of having this issue. Localhost works, but the external IP does not. Others can use the external IP though, and it works. I set up a no ip ip, but the others can't even connect to it.. Also, how can other people in my house who can't use localhost connect if the external IP does not work while connected to the same network?

Also noticed that 1.8 isn't creating the same server files like 1.7 did.
Can't go back and test 1.7 since it requires 1.8 now.

Ex:
192.168.0.100:(port) or just 192.168.0.100

quakeone you should've made your own thread rather than duplicating your problems on all the other threads.
Thank you so much! Localhost worked perfectly!
