So I've already read about other people having this same issue, but in all the threads I've read nobody has really found a solution and they all seem to have died. I'm getting these messages from my server pretty regularly:
[16:11:55] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 3684ms behind, skipping 73 tick(s)
[16:12:39] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 28018ms behind, skipping 560 tick(s)
[16:12:42] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 2414ms behind, skipping 48 tick(s)
[16:13:13] [Server thread/WARN]: Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? Running 6029ms behind, skipping 120 tick(s)
And these crashes pretty frequently too, even when playing just by myself or with only 1 or 2 other people:
[16:14:43] [Server Watchdog/FATAL]: A single server tick took 60.29 seconds (should be max 0.05)
[16:14:43] [Server Watchdog/FATAL]: Considering it to be crashed, server will forcibly shutdown.
I never used to have any issues with lag running my server even with up to 6 or 7 people on at once. I've even tried lowering the server's default render distance to a measly 6 chunks and doubled the RAM allocation (up to 2 GB) but it doesn't seem to have helped at all. We're playing on a brand new generated world and the lag has been there from the very start. In another thread someone mentioned it might be an entity count issue, but if that's so, what can I do to fix it short of running around killing all the passive mobs I see? Even that is slowly becoming impossible because of the increasing lag and it hardly seems like a fix anyways since more will spawn and we want to be able to farm animals.
It's a vanilla server run from my computer by the way, and I'm pretty sure it's got to be a problem with the new update because like I said, I never had issues before and my computer's specs and ISP have not changed.
Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. I'd like to be able to still host on 1.8, my friends and I wanted to start playing again after many months hiatus because of the new update, but I may have to revert for now until they get the issue(s) sorted out.
I have the same issue. At first I thought it was a corrupted chunk causing all the issues, but I checked my log and it had the tick running behind messages.
Yes i see this too,on a realms server i host, its not crashing but skipping ticks,, same server warnings,, the sun and the moon rubber band across the sky, unplayable lagg with no player fps drop, everyone online see's it,, i also notice that chunck updates go from 0 to the highest ive seen is 650 plus,,none of this happened until 1.8
Glad all you guys are reaffirming that the issue is very likely with 1.8 and not my computer, haha. At the same time though I hope an update with a fix is released soon. Guess I'll just have to deal with it in the meantime.
I'm not quite sure if I had the same problem as you, but I just had to downgrade to 1.7.10, since my server hadn't updated to 1.8 yet. It was an easy fix.
Yeah i have the same problem and i fixed the crashing part by putting -1 for ticks but it is too laggy especially when mining or placing blocks. I wanted to update to 1.8 as well but seems like it will be put on hold until something is changed or fixed.
Experiencing this in single player as well. I was playing on one world for several hours yesterday no problem, closed the game and went to bed. Today I tried to open it up again and the first 3 or 4 chunks render and then the game crashes with the can't keep up error. What's worse is I think this is actually corrupting worlds - if I re-install the game and then create a new world, it works perfectly. if I re-install the game and then try to play the world I originally crashed on, it crashes just as before. Additionally if I DON'T re-install the game and create a new world, it crashes. How can something like this be missed in testing the release...?
Running single player on: Phenom II X4 965 BE, Radeon HD6850, 8GB
Oh good, it's not just me. It happens in multiplayer and singleplayer. Haven't had the crashes, but haven't been on long enough to do so. I sign on, the game is unplayable because it ticks every 2 seconds. 1.8 is completely unusable for me.
I've been spending the past 6 hours trying to figure out what's wrong with my personal Minecraft Server, and only found this thread AFTER concluding that the problems my players are reporting are directly caused by updating to the server to 1.8 last week.
Symptoms reported:
Chunks would not render in background regardless of client's settings.
"It's not actually lag but it feels like lag" when walking or running. Player was on LAN connection which ruled out network connectivity. Most noticeable on horses or railways.
Breaking blocks has a delay to disappear. May disappear and then reappear on player's client. Reported as "Blocks are not breaking all the time and sometimes disappear. I can break a row of ten dirt but only be able to pick up seven."
"This is completely unplayable. I am so frustrated I am going outside to mow an acre of lawn."
Cause:
Upgrading the server to 1.8
Server Symptoms:
Server logged many [Server thread/WARN] messages whereas NONE were logged before upgrading to 1.8
CPU use maxed out on all cores. More specifically Java.exe (or the Javaw.exe) process taxes the CPU even with no players connected, and spikes between consuming 65% and 99% of the CPU.
Java would not correctly allocate memory, ie: Allocate a gig, only 256mb would be used.
Resolution:
Edited the script that starts the server to include the nogui option at the end of the execute Java command.
Personal Notes:
This solution took care of the CPU usage issue, chunks started rendering again, and all the "lag" disappeared.
The only thing notable is that the GUI will not load and administration commands will have to be executed from the CLI window that opens with the script. NOT LIKE THAT REALLY MATTERS given that the GUI has been broke since previous updates, lacking the resource monitor and log summary.
DO NOT DOWNGRADE YOUR SERVER IF THE WORLD HAS ALREADY CONVERTED TO 1.8. DOWNGRADING IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA. Players will lose ALL inventory items and ALL chests will be empty.
I can not stress enough that there was no changes made to the host server other than running 1.8. Changing the systems JRE did not make any difference. Attempting to allocate up to 4GB of RAM did not make any difference. There was no reason to suspect the CPU of needing an upgrade, as it worked with 1.7.10 just fine.
Final Thought: I hope this write up helps someone else running the Windows executable of Minecraft Server.
If you are still having problems i found a free host which so far is working great with no lag and it is (triangle.gs). I only have 2 ppl on my server at the moment so it is really good for me, i don't know the max this can handle maybe 6 players but it is a good alternative if you still can't play 1.8. I will try TheCreepyKid's suggestion to see if that works for my pc server.
Anyone know about this? (These are the latest logs, and I censored my IP with "xx.xx.xx.x:xxxxx")
I play on 1.8

Adding the nogui seemed to help so far i just tried it with myself just on the server and there is no lag. In the server log i am still getting the slow tick response but it isn't crashing.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! to TheCreepyKid for posting the solution.
I was running minecraft_server.1.8.exe directly, using Java 32-bit. I had never had issues with 1.7, but with 1.8 the server was using tons of CPU even when idle, and would skip ticks very often when only one player was logged in.
Moving to Java 64-bit and adding the "nogui" option to a startup batch file cleared it up immediately. Works perfectly now. THANK YOU!
it is probably the new watchdog feature that was put in 1.8 to where if the ticks are behind, and players are lagging. it will shut down the server, but instead it seems to crash the server then shut it down afterwords. Maybe they will remove the feature in the next update.

Adding the nogui seemed to help so far i just tried it with myself just on the server and there is no lag. In the server log i am still getting the slow tick response but it isn't crashing.
THANK YOU!
Was forced from the bukkit to the minecraft server. Went from 11% CPU to 80% and my server being unplayable.
Now I'm back down to 11% again.
Who the hell didn't check the GUI for the damm interface!
