Hi everybody,
I've been having trouble setting up a server on my D'link DIR-615 router for a loong time. I've given up year after year. But now I'm going to see if you guys can help me. I'm going to start from scratch, tell me exactly what to do.from start to finish. I am very techie and can do almost anything computer related with ample instructions. Do NOT assume anything. Ask everything. One thing you must not do, is tell me to do something that involves me buying stuff with money, I'm not rich, and will not buy anything. What should I do first?
Quick specs:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Connected through internet via wifi not hooked directly to wall
FIRST OFF MAKE A FOLDER IN YOUR DESKTOP(name it how ever u wish)
THEN GO TO www.minecraft.net AND DOWNLOAD THE MINECRAFT 1.7.10 SERVER at the BOTTOM
NEXT ONCE ITS DOWNLOADED U PLACE IT INTO THE FOLDER U MADE.
ONCE IT IS IN THE FOLDER SIMPLY RUN IT BY DOUPLE CLICKING.
THEN ONCE U RUN IT BY DOUPLE CLICKING IT A COUPLE OF FLIES SHOULD BE ADDED.
OPEN THE ELUA TEXT FILE WITH NOTE PAD.
CHANGE FALSE TO TRUE THEN RUN THE SERVER AGAIN.
THIS TIME EVEN MORE FILES COME.
THEN NEXT IS PORT FOWARDING.
TYPE CMD IN YOUR RUN APP.
AND TYPE 'ipconfig' WITHOUT THE LITTLE THHINGYS I PUT
FIND YOUR IPV4 ADRESS OR WHAT EVER AND TPYE THAT INTO YOUR SEARCH BAR ON INTERNET EXPLOERE OR CHOME OR WHAT EVER.
THEN USE YOUR LOGIN AND PASSWORD TO YOUR ROUTER> NOW IT ALWAYS DEPENDS ON WHAT ROUTER U HAVE JUST FIND PORT FORWARDING. THEN U NEED TO ADD A PORT "EXAMPLE:' Minecraft server 25565 25565 your IPv4 adress and MAKE IT TCP AND UDP.IF U DONT HAVE AN OPTION FOR BOTH DO BOTH! EZ AS PIE THEN U GO BACK TO YOUR MINECRAFT SERVER FOLDER AND OPEN YOUR SERVER PROPERTIERS THEN FIND YOUR SERVER IP AND TYPE IN YOUR IVP4 ADRESS OR WHAT EVER TA DA
The above post should help with setting up the server files so I'm not going to cover that. Also if your firewall usually only blocks the traffic if you use hamachi to host, so it shouldn't really matter that much.

OK, did exactly what both of you said, followed the port forwarding guide almost to a t, and used open port checker: http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and, closed. It says: I could not see your service on (My IP) on port (25565). What next? The picture did not have anything in the IP adress spot, tried that and couldn't, so put my computers static ip. Would hamachi help? What would be my next step?

Server has to be running
Launch server and then see if port is open
If server if offline then connection would be refused.

Ok, so opened up the minecraft_server.1.7.10.exe (Don't like that it has no text, I liked the text one better)
Checked my ip through http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ on port 25565 and..... No signal. It says: Port 25565 is closed on (My IP)
What now? I have not done anything to the server.properties should I change anything there?
assuming you are like me and on windows*; Maybe check youtube for "allowing exceptions in windows ** firewall" but usually windows will ask you if you want to allow or continue blocking **** If you go through control panel click windows firewall then click exceptions tab then add the MC server-port=25565 for both TCP and UDP like you did for the router
Are you using the 192.168 IP address when you are searching for your ip with the web site? I did that at first and it was driving me nuts. I know this sounds simple for most people but I just had to ask.

Firewalls are a tricky thing (and in particular, Windows Firewall). My guess is that you haven't whitelisted "javaw.exe". It's as simple as going into Windows Firewall and allowing a program or feature through Windows Firewall.
I also prefer canyouseeme.org since their (connection failed) messages are similar to what Minecraft error messages will tell you (a 'closed port' tells me nothing useful-is a firewall dropping the connection or is the system sending an ICMP message because there's no service listening on that port?).
You should probably remove the exception for port 25565 afterwards.

Ok, so went into windows firewall and allowed inbound feature javaw.exe at c:/Program Files(x86)/Java/Jre7/bin/javaw.exe. The looked and saw the outbound features as well, then enabled 25565 on tcp and udp on outbound and enabled javaw.exe as well. Would removing the 25565 exception make it work, or is that just to make it cleaner.
Launched the server.
Went onto http://canyouseeme.org/
And....... Error: I could not see your service on (My IP) on port (25565)
EDIT: Oh, it also says Reason: Connection refused
Hmm that's interesting. Connection refused generally means you tried to connect to something that isn't there (like trying to connect to 25566, instead of 25565).
If you reset your firewall back (you can just disable any new rules you created, and if you allowed the connection for javaw, then disallow it), do you get the same error message? If you can remember the error message you received prior to configuring the firewalls, you probably won't need to do this (doesn't hurt though). I suppose you can always check the server.properties again, but since you mentioned you haven't touched it, it probably hasn't changed. Is the connection still refused?
Some people have reported that they needed to port forward through their modem in order for this to work. If you try to use tracert to a random IP (I used Google's DNS server IP) you might see something like the pic below:
(press ctrl c to stop the command)
I have two routers set up and would need to port forward both in order to set up a Minecraft server.
Another thing you can do is make sure that you're actually using Program files (x86) and Java. I noticed that when I do "javaw -jar minecraft.exe" it uses the x86 version, but if I click the file it uses x64 version.
Admittedly, temporarily disabling your firewall for two seconds to check if canyouseeme.org can see the Minecraft server will rule out whether it's a Windows Firewall problem or not.

Hi, so sorry if this counts as waking it up, but I went on vacation and kind of forgot, soooo, anyway.
briceorbryce, I run the tracert 8.8.8.8 and I get alot of numbers, which is supposed to happen, however I don't know which is good to give away. But I know that I get my 192.168.0.1, and then I get another IP that starts with 10.7 and three more until I get my public IP. Is this a problem?
1. Do NOT use utorrent to "port forward". This is cheap, messy, and just flat out stupid to do. Port forwards should, and can ONLY be done through your router.
2. Google your router and "port forward" to find a guide on how to do it. Set it up.
3. Make an exception in the McAfee firewall for your chosen port.
This is the best way to do it, and really the only way it should be done.

Hi echonite,
I have done as you suggested using the following:
- Use this for port-forwarding: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-615v5/Minecraft_Server.htm
- Enabled 25565 as tcp and udp in mcafee firewall
- Enabled every version of javaw.exe in windows firewall (including JDK, because why not)
Went to Canyouseeme.org and got the following:
Error: I could not see your service on Public IP on port (25565)
I did a tracert to 8.8.8.8
And got the following:
1: 192.168.0.1
2: 10.7.100.1
3. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
4. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
5. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
6. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
7. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
8. -Don't know if it's safe to give out these numbers
9. etc.
But I never see my public ip! Is this a problem? I am getting my public ip from googling "what is my ip"

Just looked at hamachi and don't want the extra hassle for my server. I want the real thing.

**Port**
I think so, do you know of a good tutorial?
Started the server.
checked http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ for 25565 as an open port. Annd...... Nope. What next?
yes I am using my public ip Fathead386.
