but i dont need a buisness class line for a minecraft server. i pay $50 a month for internet + $25 a month for server power = $75 a month
your paying $65 a month for the server + (how much do you pay for internet becuase it is a cost you pay monthly)
so im atleast only $10/ month more than you. that shouldchange once you tell me what you pay for internet.
If you don't understand me... Then WHY are you arguing? You just admitted that you don't understand what we're discussing, but you continue to stubbornly press your incorrect opinion?
Wut.
Here's what. I'll put this in EXTREMELY SIMPLE TERMS.
The cost of my or your internet service has nothing to do with the cost of a dedicated server. It has quite a bit to do with the cost of hosting at home.
I pay $49/month for my server, not $65/month.
I subtracted your TV and existing internet bill from the results? Wanna combine them instead?
I pay $65+50=$115/mo for home services (internet, landline), and a dedicated server. You'd be paying $220/mo, plus a $120 setup fee, plus $500 in hardware for business internet, TV, and server hardware.
Hell, swap the phone to cable TV for my plan to make it equal with yours. $125/month vs $220/month plus $120 plus $500.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND MY POINT NOW?
Maybe you don't understand what I've been highlighting in the TOS of each provider you've thrown at me.
THEIR TOS SAYS THAT YOU CANNOT RUN A SERVER. THIS MEANS YOU MUST PAY FOR BUSINESS INTERNET, OR RENT A SERVER. IF YOU RUN A SERVER ON RESIDENTIAL INTERNET, THEY WILL CUT OFF YOUR INTERNET AND (USUALLY) BLACKLIST YOU FROM USING THEIR SERVICE AGAIN.
IS IT MAKING ANY SENSE NOW? DO I NEED TO DRAW A DIAGRAM?

Oh dear god. I'm going to give up now, you're hopeless. You obviously don't understand math, legal documents, or common sense.
Future forum-goers reading this post... I think I outlined the issues with home-hosting in a pretty good fashion. Just because the person I told it to doesn't understand anything I say (and admitted it, then had the gall to try to argue his side), doesn't change anything about the facts I posted.

so can you prove my previous statment wrong or are you just full of hot air?

You're only counting power costs. You forgot about the cost of server hardware, and a business internet line.
i dont need a buisness line. and even if i did wide open west offeres buissness plans for not much more than residential.
and yes the cost of the server hardware is a lot, but its a 1 time fee. it'll pay for itself after a while. plus i can use my server box for much more than you can use yours.

I can use my hardware for more than yours, as I have a (much) greater connection speed.

It's a risk, it's not guarenteed, but if you see more traffic or a DDoS, goodbye internet!
Why would I want to do that on my server, when I have a perfectly usable desktop here?
well for the intence gaming and 3d redering im thinking of you'd need a pretty powerful PC. such as the one i have sitting next to my right leg. a regular desktop woulnt cut it. and no it wouldnt choke my server if i were to game on it. the server uses about 4% of the CPU power and 1GB out of the 16GB avaible. so i stand by my statment that i can use my server box for more than you can use yours.

i7-2600, 12GB RAM. Better specs than my server.
And if you were actually running a server with more than yourself on it, you'd understand what I mean about resource usage.

do you realise how much of a little kid you sound right there.
you might aswell have just said 'mines bigger than yours' and blown a raspberry.
to summerise this whole thread...
paying for a host is cheaper as you only pay a set amount, you don't have to pay for hardware, connection, electricity.
home hosting you pay more in the long run, and requires an initial outlay for the hardware.
thread closed me thinks
the connection and eleectricity are things i already get... i dont have to pay more because i run a server off of them... my electric bill may be a bit higher but its not $50 more! oh and you dont need a uber fast connection to run a server. im currently hosting 5 people and using 10KB/s upload..
the most ive seen it peak to is 75KB/s upload...
how much clearer can i make myself?
ok lets do a comparason. maybe this wil lighen things up.
if i didnt have a server i would save $25 a month in electric bills
if you didnt have a server you would save $50 in renting fees.

Because this is what rendering a single video to 1080i looks like for me.
Look at this. Look at your server box or desktop or whatever the hell you're using. See my point?
well seeing as thats a laptop GPU its going to be under a heavier strain than an deskttop GPU.. a GTX570 for instance. since i have a powerful PC that i host off of, i can also use it for 3D rendering.
Server? I'm pretty sure my uptime is higher (99.98% for a typical month, while your thread is littered with complaints about the server being down), my playerbase is higher (daily peak of 10-12 online, consistent traffic every day during daylight and evening hours), my unique users is higher (1400 and counting), my server is speedier on the network side of things (good luck beating my gigabit line with your pitiful residential line), aand I'm pretty sure a304 is older (launched one of the first few days of January, Minestatus profile created on the 18th).
Desktop? I highly doubt you have a better screen than mine, and I'm also fairly doubtful that you have a OC'd 2600k, a 3770k or a 3930k/3960x... You most likely have a nicer graphics card, but I'm happy enough with what I have, and it doesn't impact rendering performance. RAM-wise I don't know, nor do I care.

Huh? The 6970m I have is a tad bit slower than a desktop 6850. It's a decent GPU, not amazing, but good enough for my current needs.

my thread is littered with complaints because its not a 24/7 server. i dont want it to be. my server runs very smoothly. my players say they love it. do i care that you have a bigger user base? nope. and i actually did just check and ive had 1,661 unique users join the server. i dont care about that either. and your servers been running for 6months now? thats nice. mines been going for 16 months now. it was created march 11, 2011. its stayed the same size and thats how i like it. small and personal. i get to know my users. and yes i do spend less per month on my server than you do. my daily peak is about 6-7. yes its smaller. yet it runs extreamly smoothly.
oh and heres a question, if you really do spend less per month on your server, then why is yours not free like mine?
my server puts no stress on my connection tho.... my connection is more than powerful enough for a small server.

Just for shits and giggles though...
Yep.
Why does that matter? At any rate, it's $65 for phone+internet. It changes nothing for the server, but since you asked...
No, because I'm hosting it on a nice dedicated server.
$25/month? Where did this figure come from, thin air? George Bush's back hair?

$25 a month for power costs. your the one who came up with it in the first place.
