i have a nice little vanilla survival server with a stable community that uses bukkit for grief protection. at 1.3 we want to add plugins to increase the adventure and get people out of their towns (and eventual boredom).
so i have goals in mind, and most of what i have mentioned seems to be covered by multiple plugins. the question is, what are the BEST plugins to accomplish this? here is my list of wants/
btw, im also looking for someone to assist me on my server staff just to help me develop the plugin concepts, installation and maintenance of plugins. if you are interested let me know.
anyways, here is wishlist:
- random spawning over large areas.
- nether will become more difficult to encourage overland travel
- some form of enhanced overland travel (likely will be easier to build railroads)
- some form of rewarding teamwork (establish towns with grief protection)
- some way for players to specialize in certain jobs like lumberjack, farmer, miner, solider that keeps the player devoted to that job for a long time
- evil classes: i want to give the meaner players a way to add adventure to the world by having evil classes designed just to cause trouble. i am very interested in monster classes such as vampire and werewolf.
- i would like to have something that encourages players to get out of the safety of their towns, be it treasure hunts, fancier dungeons, death chests (chests that contain the gear of dead players)
- i would like to lean towards a gothic/halloween theme if it all possible. less swords and sorcery and more draculas and wolfmen!

All those are great ideas, you can also look into world events such as raids... the epic battle between Steve and monsters.

Look into a Spout server. This giaves you the ability to change how the client looks weather it be texture pack, or mod with a UI or different mods. Finding these is a whole other battle, but I'm sure it exists out there somewhere.
If you're talking about randomizing spawn after death, then JavaChips' idea of fearthereaper is great. I thought you might mean though that you want new players to spawn in a fresh area free of population. Essentially "randomizing" first spawns so no one area is overpopulated. Try this http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/population-density/ in that case.
To make nether travel more difficult I'd recommend Multiverse. It has many useful features even if you just have the main world, nether, and the end. You can easily set the normal world at one difficulty and then set the nether at hard difficulty. This would make a much greater challenge. If you use an economy system you can also set a charge per world entry so people would be more reluctant to enter the nether.
Concerning jobs, it all depends on how much setup you want to do. The Jobs plugin is very intensive and can level up players in their jobs. Sounds perfect for you but there is a lot of setup and designing your own jobs involved. McJobs is what I use, and requires much less setup. The balance of the pay requires tweaking, but it is pretty much already set up. The only downside is that currently players can not level up in their jobs. This is in the works though and I think it will be working in the next release.

actually i am allowing pvp. while its not the driving concept of the server i do want it to be a factor. i would like to see some sort of claim protection for all players as long as they maintain their properties but the claims could be dropped if they werent active on that property. i assume claim taxes would be best way to deal with this. thing is, i will need a way for the player to abandon claims if they have no way of ever returning to their claim. so it must be able to be done remotely.
this is kinda how i want to see things happen. player spawns on world randomly. he can protect maybe one chunk with claims protection. after a while he gets bored and moves or finds a town he wants to join, or maybe his neighbors are hooligans! whatever, he moves. his old property needs to become a part of the adventure that can be looted or used by other players that stumble into it. that means the claim needs to dropped
i see the strength in towns being both better claim protection (larger area) and the players specializing in jobs which makes the group more productive as a whole than as individuals. maybe miners mine 20% faster, lumberjacks chop 20% faster, etc. that gives everyone a niche and the bigger the town the more specialized members it will have.
members outside of the town can be troublemakers or outlaws or whatever, so the town is safe these from bastards. i would like to see monster classes as it allows a natural way for what would normally be a problem player to become an asset. essentially they would be monster bosses!
of course towns may not get along either. if it gets so bad that it comes to war there needs to be a way for the different sides to overcome their grief protection so they can damage each other. factions plugin maybe?
one big problem im having is that it seems i must use multiple plugins to get the different classes i need. is there a way i can wrap them into one set so that a player may only be ONE of these classes? otherwise it seems he will be able to pick one class from each plugin (like lumberjack vampire for example)
yes, i want the characters to randomly spawn over a large area of the map at their first login. additionaly, if possible, i would like to see them spawn somewhere entirely new if they have not set their home using a bed.
hmm... ive never looked at multiverse. ill have to give that a look. we already have our server set at hard though so i dont know if adjusting nether would help any. but i do very much like the cost to enter idea! our server has been using the nether as a highway to other towns and i want to reduce that. that should help. actually, is there a way to make zombie pigmen always aggressive? that would make the nether really awful really fast!
concerning jobs, i really dont want people to level up in different areas. i just want each player to flat be better at whatever job he takes. can jobs support that? also it seems i will need to introduce an economy to my server. with jobs plugin do you only earn money at whatever your specialty is? ill have to take a look.
McMMO can make any class, even monsters. you can customize anything about the character. health regen, extra damage, pluses in some things, dies in daylight... whatever have you.
Aside from the war, towny is the best for protection and towns. If you put fractions in there you should be able to dull it down so it is not IN YOUR FACE that it's screaming for pvp.
You could also makes towns for monsters. It all depends on how you set up MCMMO and your ranks. some ranks can make some things and others cannot.
It should be able to be done, it will just take a lot of work. Themed servers such as this take a lot more work then your average SMP or PVP server.

Ok so I love the Grief Prevention plugin. It is made by the same dev as the Population Density I mentioned. I think these 2 could give what you want. I don't used PD but I think you can configure the amount of new people that will spawn before the area changes. Grief Prevention is an amazing region plugin. It is super simple to use, and fully protects the person's region. The user creates their region on their own without any admin help. They accrue more protection blocks the longer they play (amount is can be customized), and they can abandon a claim at any time. By default, GP has it so regions never expire, however you can set it on how many days you want to wait before a region deletes itself. This way if somebody forgets to "move out" or dies and can't find it, they just have to wait a set amount of days before they get their claim blocks back to make a new claim. Also this allows for the community loot aspect you want. If somebody isn't there for a day or two, they can get raided! Also, there is a very fun aspect of Grief Prevention pvp. It is called Siege Mode and basically forces a player to fight the person sieging their house. If somebody sieges you, you can technically hide in your house, but you can't drop any items or build until you escape the area or the battle is finished. Also while in siege mode, certain blocks can be broken by the attackers to try and tunnel in or something. The blocks breakable are changeable in the config.

Like JavaChips said, McMMO is an awesome plugin for making certain people better at certain jobs. I don't know how you could make it a player run system though. The abilities/classes for mcmmo have to be give through permissions, so an admin with permissions control would have to set a player's group manually.
With Jobs, you set how many jobs a player is allowed to have, sounds like you'd do 1. Players will only make money from doing the actions of that job. Jobs does not make a player better at a certain thing, just pays them for doing it. OH OH actually I just remembered, problem solved.
Jobs, not mcJobs, can be set up so a certain job has certain permissoins! So you set up McMMO with the abilities you want (which makes people better at selected activities which they can level up in and get even better). Then you give only the Miner job from Jobs the mcmmo.ability.mining permission. Now the miner earns money for mining and is the only one that can get better at mining and use speed mining ability. This can apply to sword skill and a soldier job or something as well. Only they use the sword skill and get money for killing mobs. This will be a lot of customization work for you to make these plugins work together like this, but it would work flawlessly and give you exactly what you want.

maybe i need a permissions system that lets player choose a certain job or class. that way i could integrate different types. whats a good permissions system where players can choose what ladder they go into? better yet, whats one that would let them switch jobs at the cost of xp or money?i just got reading about the jobs plugin. that sounds exactly like what i need.hmm.. so the jobs plugin basically lets you build your own jobs by using features from other plugins. am i understanding this correctly?
what prevents people from changing jobs constantly?
i was looking at mmsupernaturals for the monster classes but its becoming more and more apparenty i should try to just wrap that into one plugin. ill definitely be taking a closer look at mcmmo.
grieft prevention is the best damn plugin that ever existed! we have been using it for a few months and its simply amazing. i didnt realize it could be set to have claims decay! i guess i should brush up on this plugin lol.
where are you seeing that you can set the grief prevention claims to expire? i cant seem to find it.
does mcmmo REQUIRE you use to xp? it would be nice if say lumberjack had all regular abilities BUT chopped trees like a maniac. i dont want all my players eventually being maxed out in all skills. specialization!

It is at the top of the Grief Prevention config:
IdleLimitDays: 0
I found a description in the administrative section of GP and it sounds like it's not perfect for what you want after all. It says this setting will delete all of a player's claims after not logging into the server for a certain amount of days. So this would help with looting inactive players, but it won't help if a person moves without removing their protections. However, if a person is moving around, I'm assuming they only have one claim at a time really, so they could just do /abandonallclaims and remotely delete all claims.
I don't know what you mean by McMMO requiring exp. Minecraft exp is completely unused by mcmmo. If you are referring to the mcmmo skills leveling up, you can set each skill's exp gain from each type of thing (ie how much mining exp you get for breaking stone).
Also, you should look deeper into the Jobs plugin, as you can customize it deeply. I am not sure how it handles job switching but I would think the creator would include something to help with that.
Here's what you can do that I think is what you want:
Give everyone mcmmo.skills - This will allow everyone to level up in all skills, so no matter what class you are, you will start level up in, for example, mining and start getting double drops at a higher rate. However, this does not give the abilities that need to be activated, just passive benefits.
Through jobs, give only certain jobs mcmmo.ability.abilityname - In this way, a miner would get mcmmo.ability.mining and would be the only player to be able to user the super breaker ability. That's the one that lets you mine like a beast for a few seconds. On my server I am level 300 at mining and my super breaker lasts 5 seconds. I can mine a 2x2 tunnel that is 15-20 blocks long in that time. It's way fun.
Anyway, this would make it so everyone has fun and can level up their skills like a regular mmo, but only the proper classes would get super abilities that related to their skill level. So a woodsman would want to stay a woodsman so they can keep using superchop or whatever it's called and getting tons of wood to, say, sell in the store. You might also give the woodsman the axes ability Skullsplitter to encourage that character to use axes as their weapon.

i read up on mcmmo on bukkit dev and the mcmmo wiki. is there any more documentation where i can learn on how to make monster classes like vampire? i didnt see anywhere where i could add something like "burns in sunlight". google is failing me pretty hard too. not sure to where look for a good list of abilities and strengths/weaknesses that i can choose from.

I am not sure about monster classes. Mcmmo has recently implemented a vampirism feature, but it seems you just set it in the config and everyone gets it, there is no permission for it. It basically leeches McMMO skill levels from a player you kill. Sounds fun, but I wish only certain players got it. With Mcmmo and the way I said to give certain permissions through Jobs, you can make your basic classes like Soldier, miner, digger, woodsman, monk (mcmmo unarmed skill) etc. But as far as monster I am having a hard time finding anything for you. There is a plugin called Vampire, but it doesn't seem fully working yet. Maybe this is would help with vampires http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/sunburn-reborn/ Sunburn has perms to protect certain people or burn certain people, so only the vampire "job" would get burned in the sun.
i think it can be used seperately from classes because it requires tradeoffs. for example vampires burn during day but are awesome in hand to hand. priests can banish monsters (to nether) but they cant wear armor. yikes. so the regular classes would be pure bonus, but the monster classes add weaknesses in exchange for powers.
