Hi guys I'm here to complain about McBans and how server admins ban you because you've been banned on other servers. If one idiot bans you unfairly suddenly all these other servers want to ban you too! That is all.
Hi guys I'm here to ***** about McBans and how server admins ban you because you've been banned on other servers. If one idiot bans you unfairly suddenly all these other servers want to ban you too! That is all.
This is very true, now for some evidence:
**** of the week - The Story Of Doridian, or 'how to get an entire player base to hate you'
Today, I relate the story of Doridian, for all those who have been living in a hole and haven't heard about this fabulous cautionary tale of why not to trust complete morons with your server's global ban system.
It's likely you have played Minecraft. It's also likely you've used mods for Minecraft, or played on a multiplayer server. It's also likely you've done both at once, because almost every 'professional' server makes use of a system like Essentials or Bukkit that do all the policing for you.
MCBans is one such service. Only, it's turning out to be one of the most retarded pieces of programming the Minecraft world has ever seen, run by the two most massive assholes you will ever meet.
First, in order to really capture the essence of who Doridian is, there needs to be a bit of backstory.
Doridian is a developer of MCAdmin, a similar service to Essentials that administrates the banning of users on a server. One wonders why someone would include Doridian in the development team after his history of crashing GMod servers. Fairly predictably, our friend Dori has included a backdoor, allowing him to join any server and set himself op, which he went on to do. In one example, he joined some private Hamachi server, and started saying things like "Do you know who I am?!" and when he was banned for griefing, brought down their server through his system they were using in good faith. So, an expert in maintaining good PR? Actually, no, a complete tool.
Since this incursion, Doridian has added a few clauses to his software's T&C, no doubt in an effort to make it look like it has been changed for the better (which hasn't actually happened).
First of all:
MCAdmin contains what is called "Developers Mode", this Developers mode is only enabled after you have given your consent or it has been stated otherwise you require assistance. This "Developer's Mode" can only be enabled by the Official Developers of MCAdmin.
So he has made a 'developer mode', and only he can switch it on or off. It's only enabled when it has been 'stated otherwise'. So Doridian could come along and 'decide' you need help, and therefore put his dev mode on. Sound good? I don't think so.
Moving on: The Developers have permission to Disable your server's connection for whatever reason they see fit. This is not necessarily an issue. If your server has been disabled it is most likely because you have broken one of the rules stated here.
Let's take a look at these 'rules':
By using MCAdmin, you are to respect the Developers of the Software. (If a Developer has done wrong, then you are all by means, free to ban them, though reasons such as "Not Speaking Proper English" are not valid reasons)
So you are free to ban him if he griefs, but only if he is okay with it.
By using MCAdmin, you should know the Developers of MCAdmin and know they will never harm you, your server and/or computer in any way.
So if some blundering asshole appears on your server, is rude to you and says they are the developer, you could get banned for not believing him, or for not letting him go on his merry way, commands and all.
Now, then, we have Firestar's MCBans. What MCBans does is maintain a global list of banned people, and when a person is banned on one server, they are automatically banned on all others using the service. The problems with this should be immediately obvious. When you use a global ban system, you trust the owners to be impartial and to effectively moderate the use of their system. As we've already seen, this is something Doridian finds incapable of doing. So it boggles the mind why he would be included as a developer, as well as the legendary Zidonuke, who has a series of videos of him crashing servers 'for the lulz', and a history of single-handedly destroying other projects such as PWO.
Therefore, it was fairly predictable that after his temporary inclusion as a developer he took over the entire MCBans system. Being the amazing PR baws that MCBans Management is, they repeatedly denied that it ever happened, and that Zidonuke had access to the entire API, able to remove any bans people set against him. Zidonuke and Doridian eventually teamed up and made Yiffcraft, a modified client designed for hacking and crashing servers. To quote TKTech, this is illegal for a whole boatload of reasons.
Just in case you aren't completely convinced of the complete dickery of the entirety of MCBans staff, there is one more juicy tale to tell.
The MCBans forum was hacked during January 6th and 7th, by the 'Organisation of Raged Arab Bloggers' (snrk). This happens to lots of sites, all the time, and isn't that big of a problem - the difference is how you treat your users in the aftermath. MCBans staff were quite obviously experts at this.
The first thing they did was to adamantly deny that such a hacking ever happened. When it became obvious that this wasn't true, they went ahead and admitted that the forum had been compromised, but the database was safe. In response to this blatant lie, the hackers emailed everyone with a forum account, forcing the staff to admit that the database had been ransacked. They also mentioned that the backup databases were safe, but this too turned out to be a lie when API keys were posted in public locations, proving that these databases weren't so safe after all. To top it all off, the forum was deleted the moment people started asking questions.
On the afternoon of the hack, TKTech recorded some of the most monumental events of douchbaggery ever to grace a minecraft-related IRC server. Envygeeks is a temporary staff member hired to help with 'security issues'. He does this job with exceptional skill and good grace.
[05:27] <g> Hey, Fire and Stracci are too stressed out to explain, so I decided to ask directly what it is you're doing for us

[06:49] <envygeeks> you're all a bunch of faggots
And just in case the team hadn't obliterated every ounce of respect and decency they once had, they took a final stab at TKTech once he posted these logs on his site, sending him the usual bogus 'cease and desist' emails. Naturally, this didn't work, and the email is now on the internet for all to see.
Many of the statements about MCBans.com on the offending wiki are untrue and defamatory. You made them maliciously to injure MCBans in its trade, office and profession. As such, they are defamatory per se. Under Communications Decency Act of 1996, this letter constitutes a demand for immediate retraction in writing of these false and libelous statements. In accordance with the Communications Decency Act of 1996, MCBans demands that your retraction and correction be accompanied by an editorial in which you specifically repudiated your libelous statements.
Below, we have noted some of the more patent, malicious, and libelious comments made by you in your postings; some of them also evidence your tortuous
interference.
1. In your postings, you repeatedly stated that David Brown, also known as Zidonuke, is/was a member of the MCBans development and/or administration team, this is untrue.
2. In your postings, you repeatedly involve the activity of David Brown with malicious intent towards MCBans when he has never been directly or officially involved in the management of MCBans or it's development.
3. You also defame our staff by implying that we intentionally kept information from the public regarding the recent intrusions on our service, this is untrue as at the time of the postings by our staff we were unaware of the severity of the intrusion.
4. You have updated the article since it's creation also framing MCBans and it's staff for holding user data for malicious intent which is also untrue.
Your spreading of this information barring the attempt to contact our staff regarding in incident and attempt to check the information you gathered or obtained from unknown sources to verify your postings also confirms your malicious intent.
If you do not immediately publish the requested retraction, and cease and desist from tortuous interference and making false and malicious comments about MCBans, it's staff, and its services, we will be forced to take further action against you. This email also constitutes a request to the ISP for the content (amazon.com) for immediate suspension of access to the offending content and/or it's removal until such a time that a resolution is achieved by both parties within 5 working days of this notice being received.
I hereby state, under penalty of perjury, that I am authorized to act on the behalf of MCBans and it's staff.Anyone ready to take them to court?
Finally, it's worth mentioning the email that proved MCBans had been hacked. It's always nice to have people around who know the full story and can do something about it. I'll end this friday with the best email you will ever see.

Subject: NO security breach at mcbans.com
Date: Sun, 8 Jan 2012 00:12:31 +0000Dear user who's information was definitely NOT compromised.,
We are writing to inform you that there was absolutely NO breach in our "extensive" security measures that could allow your personal information and all the API keys to be leaked, because of this we DO NOT suggest you change your mcbans.com password. This breach DID NOT affect anyone. If your Minecraft password is the same as any password you use for MCBans you should not give a ****. Our server is protected by an expired version of Norton Antivirus from 2007 and thus is absolutely hacker-proof.
For further support go to support.mcbans.com and open a ticket or contact us on IRC at irc://irc.esper.net:5555 on #mcbans or #yesyourinformationwascompromised. You may verify that your information WAS NOT COMPROMISED by searching for it in our uncompromised database which we have temporarily mirrored publicly for verification purposes: http://ddoscom.in/dongs.sql
As you should see, your information is still in our uncompromised database and thus has not been stolen.
We would like to thank you for your continued support and use of mcbans.com and we apologize for any inconvenience this has not caused. Rest assured that if there ever were a breach of our systems, the kind Nigerian prince who funds our operation would be more than willing to offer you 7 figure restitution if you can just help him out a bit. Hell, he's probably about to make you this offer just because he loves you.
I hope you all want Viagra because our associates have plenty to sell.
Kind Regards,
The MCBans Badministration Totalitarian Regime and Führer Firestar
Remember:
- Firestar likes cocks.
- Denial is the best security measure ever and lying through your teeth is the truest display of integrity.
- Also, we have never ever been hacked, if someone claims otherwise they are bullshitting you.
- And to re-iterate once more, Firestar likes cocks.

Evidence Numero 2:
MCBans, a very popular global ban system for the viral indie hit Minecraft. Having over 1492 total (non-concurrent) installations, it is by far the most popular. Global ban systems are a useful way of discouraging griefers from vandalizing servers in multiplayer games where no other system exists, or when more control is needed over what the game creators original provided.
These systems can work, and can work very well where they do. However, these systems are fundamentally designed on trust. By you (a server owner) or you (a player) utilizing a global ban system, you're trusting the individuals that develop and run the system to remain completely impartial and to be responsible with the power they're given.
MCBans is unfortunately the perfect example of why you need to do a bit of research before putting your trust into a global, centralized service controlled by only a few individuals. One of the most damning things was the inclusion of Doridian and zidonuke as developers. Doridian became infamous in the Minecraft community when it was discovered that a popular server administration plugin he had created contained a backdoor allowing Doridian to take over a server, even banning the owner - which he did. He later apologized and released McAdmin as open source. However, he also went on to work on mods to another popular hit, Terraria, which ended fairly predictably when he went and destroyed their forum and ran off(Apologies, the event I originally mentioned appears to actually have been zidonuke, and the sources used also made the same mistake - I will clarify on this when I can contact a tMod developer).
Whoever makes the hiring decisions for MCBans was aiming to be an all-star strikeout with the (temporary) inclusion of zidonuke on the team who was also infamous in the Minecraft community for a series of videos showing him for “the lulz” and generally being an outright ****. Sounds like an outstanding candidate to develop and manage a global ban system, right? He's also managed to single-handedly destroy several other projects, such as PWO.
To any future employers, developers, or other individuals seeking potential work with Zidonuke:
this behaviour is not an isolated event. Multiple times in the past, Zidonuke has carved out and
shut down (albeit almost always temporarily) websites, game servers, and other communities for
reasons that at the time aren’t apparent. At times he has revealed personal information about
users (this is not one of those times). I would warn you to ensure that he is someone you trust
entirely and have a friendly and warm relationship with before allowing him access into your devices.
While I don’t believe it would be fair to vilify him and declare he never find work again, I feel
obligated to issue a warning so that those seeking to work with him in the future are aware of his past.
- crenel
The users didn't think so, and voiced this loudly both on IRC and on the forums (now conveniently wiped). Predictably, this ends in him taking over the MCBans system and posting a note on the MCBans frontpage. MCBans staff still refuse to acknowledge (outside of anonymous PMs) that Zidonuke had access to the entire API, removing any bans that affected himself. This is really a shame, as from Zidonuke's professional history, he's an extremely capable individual.
[00:16:01] <NateN34> Zidonuke?!
[00:16:16] <NateN34> The guy that made a server mod and it crashed and DDOSed others servers?
[00:16:24] <Zidonuke> Yeah?
Unfortunately, it appears that Doridian and zidonuke are peas in a pod. So much so, that some users are convinced they're the same person with mental instability.
I'll say this one thing to all the above, I love Doridian and I shall protect him against
anything even if it is the truth. That is just my level of devotion to him.
- Zidonuke
These two later teamed up to produce Yiffcraft, a modified client designed to hack and crash, and sold it for commercial profit (which is illegal for an entire basket full of reasons).
To put the cherry on the cake and to top off the New Year, the MCBans forum was compromised between January 6th and 7th, by parties not yet confirmed, however the domain used for the attack is run by “ARAB ( Organization of Raged Arab Bloggers )” (since shutdown by the hosting provider). By itself, this is notreally that major of an issue. This happens constantly, across sites both big and small. The difference is how you resolve the issue, and how you communicate with your users. MCbans appears to have taken a leaf out of Sony's book with their 5-step process.
First, adamantly refusing to admit any issue had occurred whatsoever.
Then later claimed that the forum had been compromised without getting access to the database.
Admitting that the forum database had been taken when every registered user began receiving an email from the attackers.
Finally admitting that a backup of the forum and of the ban database had been taken when users API keys were posted in public locations.
Closing the (new) forum once people began asking for details and an explanation.
This is my personal (unedited) log from #mcbans the afternoon of the hack. Usernames with a @ preceding them are MCBans staff. These are some of the most unprofessional individuals I've ever met, and I'm no shining example myself!
These amazing conversations are between MCBans staffers g and rakiru with envygeeks, a temporary staffer apparently hired to help with “security issues”. These are the people you've entrusted to control your server bans.

MCBans Legal Threat
Ah, this was a lovely site in my inbox this morning. Forwarded to me by Amazon, this was to me on behalf of MCBans, and is effectively an attempt at forcing the article to disappear. Obviously, this won't happen.

MCBans final statement, when they couldn't deny it any longer:
MCBans Staff Member said:
To whom it may concern,
You may or may not be aware of the issues we have recently experienced at mcbans.com.
We would like to inform you that the security issues have now been resolved and any password information leaked is hashed (one-way encrypted) in the highest grade of protection available.
At the time, we were unaware of some of the more specific details regarding the attack and the data which was compromised. Now that the immediate threat is over and our damage report is complete, we have decided to release all the relevant information on what happened during the attack.
On 01/01/2012, MCBans became aware of a security breach on a server which contained our users’ personal information. The incident involving protected user information was the theft of a backup of mcbans.com which was made between December 2010 and April 2011 and was hosted on a remote server which then served as forums.mcbans.com.
This backup contained usernames, highly encrypted passwords (conforming to Internet guidelines), email addresses and up to 500 valid server API keys which are still in use. This information was gained access to by a group of malicious hackers through an exploit in an older version of our forum software.
We would like to stress that immediate action was taken to combat this leak of information by enabling an IP-Lock on compromised API keys and regenerating the keys of servers which were at high risk of attacks.
We recommend immediate steps be taken to protect yourselves from potential information breach harm by changing all passwords associated with mcbans.com and any other sites that use the same password as your MCBans account. If you change your password there will be no other implications of this attack.
MCBans.com has taken these steps to protect your, and others’ personal information from further harm or similar circumstances: Initiated an in-depth business security evaluation. Addressed operational and technological updates or changes triggered by the incident to improve confidentiality, such as (developing an in-house forum/switching forum to IP. and updating administrative policies and/or procedures. Contacted all ISPs/hosts used to facilitate this attack. Most if not, all ISP’s/hosts have complied with our requests, and we will continue to ask for take-downs until we see fit. Introduced a new team of System Administrators to overlook our infrastructure and ensure that everything is running highly optimized, and that our systems are secure. Improved system-wide security measures to remove access to unauthorized parties to prevent this from happening in the future. MCBans.com would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this incident has caused you. Your privacy is extremely important to us and we will continue to do everything we can to correct this situation and fortify our operational protections for you and others.
You may contact us with questions or concerns in the following ways: By joining our IRC channel, #mcbans on irc.esper.net or webchat http://*******/ynWF7A By visiting our forums, forums.mcbans.com By submitting a support ticket with us at support.mcbans.com By contacting our team directly via email at [email protected] Sincerely, MCBans Administration www.mcbans.com

Um... wow... pretty damning if I do say so myself. I'd heard rumours about it, but seeing these emails makes it hard to disbelieve.
I've never really played much multiplayer though I have been on a few servers. Never been banned, but if I do visit any new servers I might think twice before joining a McBan' server...
The majority of the thing is, McBans is put into the hands of those who don't know how to use it properly. There needs to be a bit stricter protocol on who can use it.

This, and also it's controlled by people who can't control it properly. I have no problem with Global Banning systems, but McBans takes the ****. Anyone who wants a good global banning system, use Glizer, it's not biased, and has more features.
I am currently in the process of emailing each new MCbans server to tell them to remove MCBans. I sugggest you all do the same if you are
banned. Just don't tell them your minecraft username!
I am not banned. I have one McBans ban. From the retard (see my above post), Doridian's server.
most server owners don't want someone who was already banned on there server. if you got banned then its your fault. BUT if they ban you from previous bans, it can only be local. local bans don't affect reputation and are not usually looked at.
Short Story - don't get banned in the first place, then you cannot get the "previous bans" message.
EDIT: I fully agree that they should survey servers, and make tighter rules

I use MCBans on my servers and I just ask the admins to monitor those who have been banned on other servers once they join to make sure they aren't doing anything wrong. We don't automatically ban people.

But McBans is SOO easy to abuse. Team Avolition can get ANYONE they feel like globally permabanned by saying that the person is affiliated with them. They also ban alts used in griefing videos, which are actually other peoples accounts which would be fine if the person changed the password.
@ThePsychoMantis
How can you tell if it's a crap server without playing it?
I completely agree!! I go on to mcserverlist, click on one of the servers and join, then i'm greeted with "You have previous bans" then they question you and treat you like crap....
McBans is a good idea, too bad it's filled with crappy players.... One time, I was banned on McBans for "Racism" just because I joined a server not knowing the admin spoke some other language. I said "Hello", they said "RACIST!!!! U DONT SPEEK GERMAN" so they banned me..... I went on another server that had mcbans and it said I was banned previously.. They started calling me a racist freak... and then they were questioning me....

A server admin who allows a global banning system or other servers' admins to dictate who is banned on their server is just lazy. Plain and simple. I check new players against the ban databases with http://whitelist.mcf.li/, but I have the wherewithal to realize that people can 1) Be banned unjustly 2) Change their ways and 3) Be banned after becoming compromised. If someone does show up positive on these ban lists, I know that I need to keep a keener eye on them to make sure they are behaving.
"Global bans" are a joke. If you're running your server, do your job; watch your players. Don't let others control your bans.

Umm... if you get banned for a bad reason, you should dispute the ban. Usually the MCBans employees will ask for evidence if you are banned.
All I know is that if someone who was banned requests a whitelist on my server then I either:
1) If they said "No I haven't been banned" deny them.
2) Accept them when they tell me why they was banned.
Edit: I'm not saying MCBans is perfect, for example, Notch has a global ban for griefing... I highly doubt he did that.
I've seen an example of where a server globally banned somebody because they were globally banned on another server, an mcBans admin saw this, reversed the global ban and reduced the reputation of the server.
This, and also it's controlled by people who can't control it properly. I have no problem with Global Banning systems, but McBans takes the ****. Anyone who wants a good global banning system, use Glizer, it's not biased, and has more features.
If anything the Bukkit Staff/Dev team should work on a global banning system which could be optional for users to add to the server and it could easily integrate with the website bukkit.org... would be so much easier than having MCBans ran down by some corrupt people
P.S thanks for the read about the whole MCBans story
Moving on:
The Developers have permission to Disable your server's connection for whatever reason they see fit.

[06:52] <envygeeks> I don't work for "us" I work for firestar

[06:54] <envygeeks> Who are you to ask again?
[06:57] <g> I'm on the team

You may verify that your information WAS NOT COMPROMISED by searching for it in our uncompromised database which we have temporarily mirrored publicly for verification purposes:
http://ddoscom.in/dongs.sql

However, he also went on to work on mods to another popular hit, Terraria, which ended fairly predictably when he went and destroyed their forum and ran off(Apologies, the event I originally mentioned appears to actually have been zidonuke, and the sources used also made the same mistake - I will clarify on this when I can contact a tMod developer).Whoever makes the hiring decisions for MCBans was aiming to be an all-star strikeout with the (temporary) inclusion of zidonuke on the team who was also infamous in the Minecraft community for a series of videos showing him for “the lulz” and generally being an outright ****.

Thank you for taking notice of this.
I hope everyone else does also.
This, and also it's controlled by people who can't control it properly. I have no problem with Global Banning systems, but McBans takes the ****. Anyone who wants a good global banning system, use Glizer, it's not biased, and has more features.
I am not banned. I have one McBans ban. From the retard (see my above post), Doridian's server.
Short Story - don't get banned in the first place, then you cannot get the "previous bans" message.
EDIT: I fully agree that they should survey servers, and make tighter rules
Or just filter ban reasons and hire less retarded staff.
But McBans is SOO easy to abuse. Team Avolition can get ANYONE they feel like globally permabanned by saying that the person is affiliated with them. They also ban alts used in griefing videos, which are actually other peoples accounts which would be fine if the person changed the password.
@ThePsychoMantis
How can you tell if it's a crap server without playing it?
McBans is a good idea, too bad it's filled with crappy players.... One time, I was banned on McBans for "Racism" just because I joined a server not knowing the admin spoke some other language. I said "Hello", they said "RACIST!!!! U DONT SPEEK GERMAN" so they banned me..... I went on another server that had mcbans and it said I was banned previously.. They started calling me a racist freak... and then they were questioning me....
You should appeal your ban on http://mcbans.com/player/davidt9614
"Global bans" are a joke. If you're running your server, do your job; watch your players. Don't let others control your bans.
Precisely.
If anything the Bukkit Staff/Dev team should work on a global banning system which could be optional for users to add to the server and it could easily integrate with the website bukkit.org... would be so much easier than having MCBans ran down by some corrupt people
P.S thanks for the read about the whole MCBans story

If you don't play on it, how could you tell it's crap?
