id like to introduce jobs to my bukkit server. there are A LOT of plugins out there but i am trying to find best one suited for my needs. the goal is that i would like to put a greater emphasis on teamwork and trade. specialization will benefit everyone as long as they work together.
requirements:
1) players are able to pick their own job
2) its not something they have to earn, they can do it from the start
3) they cannot change jobs easily. (just so over the course of one project they dont switch multiple jobs multiple times to have the maximum benefit during that particular part of the job)
4) i would like to lean more towards PASSIVE abilities as much as possible. (like lumberjack plugin, they just chop trees faster and easier)
5) i dont want to take away abilities from anyone, i just want to ENHANCE abilities of those who select a job.
here are the jobs i would like, but am not entirely sure if some can be implemented:
mayor - able to protect areas (towny i would assume)
miner - faster mining or improved drops?
lumberjack - lumberjack plugin seems ideal
farmer - i have no idea!
rancher - i have no idea!
fishermen - i have no idea!
builder - i have no idea!
blacksmith - make magic items easier, repair magic items
potion maker - i have no idea!
trader or shopkeeper -
engineer - (redstone and minecarts)
knight - improved combat abilities
so which of these are feasible? and whats the best plugin(s) for this?
Since you want to focus more on passive abilities though, the best thing for that is McMMO, which give you stats with passive ability upgrade, much like Lumberjack...
You can actually limit in permissions what abilities certain people could use. So you can make a group, for instance farmer, and set the permission mcmmo.ability.herbalism only for that class.
I don't know how you will get people to pick classes, perhaps mixing it with the Heroes and giving each class permissions to McMMO individually in that configuration file.
It will be a tough amount of work, but once you do it you will have an extremely unique server.
I remember a plugin called mcJobs used to be very popluar and is still very good now however it is no longer updated nor supported but i feel that the plugin should one day be recoded to work with the updates and bring out the fun parts of an economy

At first glance I thought of the Jobs plugin, but I realize now this isn't for you. It has all the requirements you have except for the passive abilities, which is a pretty major part of your idea.

To help your cause...
Here is permissions for McMMO: http://mcmmo.wikia.com/wiki/Permissions
And why not.... here's Heroes as well: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/heroes/forum/
