I was trying to use the world edit command //set to change an area of 1,000,000 blocks to redstone torches. When I tried this it froze for a second, then it said "1,000,000 blocks changed". But nothing happened, then the server crashed and said something about java read timeout. I don't understand how a mere 1,000,000 blocks could crash my server. My system has: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo , 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics. I have 4 GB memory dedicated to server. I could try to get access to a more powerful computer... How much computer power do I need to do this? Please try to be serious if your answering, I don't need a fricken Cray. Also, If you say Alienware I will put your Xbox in the microwave.

You cannot change 1,000,000 blocks redstone torches redstone makes the server lag alot and barley any computers are built to survive that much blocks if you cannot access your server delete the map then run run.bat and it will generate a new world 4gb isnt enough you would need like 32 gb
it's as if a million entities cried out at once and were suddenly silenced. A million blocks you might have been able to get away with, but not a million entities each on a despawn timer.
You will have to start smaller and work your way up to finding the point at which /set will crash your server.

Do you think this would work... 4 x 2.2GHz 16 core AMD Opteron, 512 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, NVIDIA Quadro 6000 6 GB graphics?
why 50% chance on a worse computer? Mincecraft is not multithreaded, and he's talking about going down CPU frequency and using one sixteenth the amount of ram as the first time lol.
**EDIT** while i did say 'worse' computer, i dont mean that in the strictest sense- i'm purely talking in terms of running minecraft.

Ehem... "one sixteenth the amount of ram"? I think you need to check your math... 512GB is 64x8GB... And while 2.2GHz is less than 2.4GHz, there are four 2.2GHz 16-core CPUs. Seriously, check your math before posting :smile.gif:
