I have to say one thing and i hope many do not take this the wrong way. But i have to say that i think a lot of the servers out there while interesting often seem to try to just grab money from players for donation "perks". Nothing wrong with encouraging players to donate, often servers are hosted by a group of people who are fans of the game and have to pay for server hosting and need the support, but i have often seen even on larger servers ridiculous pricing for "perks" like 100 to 250 US dollers, i am like ...really? I am playing on a server CityCraft Build that offers many persks for a simple moderate one time donation. and i have to wonder why a lot of other servers dont follow suit. I am sure they want to keep out some of the higher end stuff to avoid greifers, sure but my thought is that if your willing to donate anything at all chances are your less likely to be one to cause trouble.
I just think maybe some servers are using that as a way to make a bit of profit instead of just sharing in something we can all enjoy in and come together. I just look down on many servers offering such a very high priced rank for "perks" besides you might actually get more funds by lowering the pricing and more people would actually be interested in donating.
Servers don't make profits from donations, that simply never happens. The best servers are the ones that can break even consistently, so they can pay their bills. :dry.gif:

My livestream channel, gonna stream some arma (or other games)!
Yes, one thing that I have consistently seen in larger servers is that the more popular you are, the more you can get away with charging ridiculous prices for donation benefits for silly and insignificant perks, something I hope to avoid in my own servers.
I know at least 3 servers that took donations then once they got a few people to donate they shut the sever down... No idea what they did with the money.. Obviously wasn't for the server.
I think any donator perks that give you an advantage in the game should be done away with. Granted you won't find many 1000+ player servers surviving for long off donations for nothing, but since when are those servers fun to be on anyway? They're usually griefed all over and flooded with annoying kids. I think the better option here, is to require a monthly payment to play on the server. Then you can guarantee each user is paying for their slot, and charge lower prices as well as keep the game fair and balanced. Of course if one were to do this, they would absolutely have to offer a free trial (7-14 days would be a good timeframe), so that potential players would be able to see that the server isn't utter crap like 99% of the minecraft servers are. They would also have to make sure that the server is well done, of course.

I tried starting a server like that, and everything that anyone said to me was along the lines of: 'why should I have to pay all of your bills? You have enough money to not need mine'
I'd do instantly, if people would actually pay for it. Noone here would pay for a server like they would for wow. :sleep.gif:
Edit: Here's the idea I had... would anyone be interested in working on it with me? :smile.gif:
We regularly get people wanting to make money off their server. Not just pay server bills, but actually make money and profit from it. It seems like one of the new schemes going around for the younger crowd.

I'm sorry, but maybe server owners must have to have an incentive to make players donate. Not all servers are "full of little kids." There are a lot of good servers out there. You are just being lazy, and complaining and highlighting the bad ones. Sure, quality has decreased over time. I still see good servers around. Not all large ones are S**t. Minecraft would have never had servers like it has today without donations, because I don't think many of the people who run servers (15-22 years old) have a ton of money to go around. Perks are a good thing. Simple perks like creative world access aren't unfair to others. A monthly payment to join the server? You've got to be kidding me. I've only seen that work one time. (IndustrialRevolution) No one is going to pay to play a minecraft server. I'm not going to pay to punch a tree when I can just do it in single player or on a different server. I'm not going to pay to RP when I can go and do it for free somewhere else.
I do, however, agree with the title of the thread. Donations are sometimes overpriced. The only thing we can really do about high prices is not pay them.

You failed miserably, by the way.
