Me and two other friends were playing on my server when this message popped up "[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?".
I'm not sure what it means or what to do about it, but it causes ridiculous amounts of lag, even with just one person online.
What can I do to get my server error and lag free?
It means your computer isn't capable of keeping up with the server. Have one computer run the server and play on a different computer. If that's what your already doing, you'll probably just need to buy a new computer to host the server.

You should probably just join on one of the thousands of servers out there already and enjoy not having to admin a server.

Either save up for a cheap box and use the opportunity to learn about servers, pay the couple of bucks a month to host a server, or just join someone else's. Honestly, you can find a cheap computer on Craig's List for pretty cheap, you need at least a core 2 duo.

I just fixed this problem with my server. I play the game on my PC. I run a server on a separate mac, that I use for high end graphic editing. I'm talking two 3.0 quad core xeon processors, (8 core) with 16 gigs of ddr3 ram. Everything works fine. Then one day I logged in (nothing on the server changed) and it is terribly laggy and I get the message on the server
[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?
This is what I did to fix it.
First I stopped the server, by typing
stop
Then I changed the server settings, spawn-monsters=false and view-distance=3
I logged onto the server (less laggy) I turned all the graphic settings to the lowest, changed view from far to tiny I ran out of the area I was in, far far away. then logged out. I then stopped the server. I was then able to play the game fine without the lag. Then I changed all the server settings back to normal,
Spawn-monsters=true
view-distance=10
started the server back up, and everything works fine again. I am thinking there was something in that area that overloaded the system. and leaving the area allowed it to disappear or whatever it did.
jamesfilms thanks for posting useful information on how to fix the problem rather than immediately telling OP to spend money. There are a few things to try before giving up and buying a hosted server...
Reduce the number of plugins you have running on the server. There are also a few performance plugins that claim to help with the "Can't keep up" messages (nolagg and Ptweaks are two of them). You could also get obushutthehellup to just stop the messages from spamming console if you arent noticing any major issues with lag.
There are also some settings you could change, like james suggested. There are things you can do to get rid of the messages. Just do a bit of research before going out and buying a new server if you don't really need one.
Use McEdit or let it run while the tnt blows up. If that doesn't help, you can ship the world off to get it fixed, aka someone with a stronger machine lets it go boom
As an experienced server owner, I would just ignore it. I find that it actually does not affect the performance at all. It is just a warning. If it starts becoming [SEVERE], then i would give the server a reboot.
