You can add to your server a new micro-market. The clothiers market. A way to have different "clothes" (skins) for your players.
Those who can make skins, or modify skins in little, can sell the new skins or the modified pieces to other players. Its also a way to encourage your economic system, and also to improve the skins development.
The idea of doctors and police are good ideas and there are some plugins such as the "jail" plugin on Bukkit forums, with this plugin people can be assigned "jail sticks" to round up criminals. As for doctors and the like I know several plugins which if you have the correct permission node you can heal others.
Btw if you need more info just drop me a pm :smile.gif:
Yeah! I look in a very positive way to the police´s idea. But not really to the idea about letting all just be, without protection. That cause the reason that I have exposed from myself.
But the doctor´s and jail´s ideas are really the best in my opinion :smile.gif:
I like the idea! But I do agree with that other poster. Resources will need to be very limited. The reason why economy doesn't work in minecraft is because you can get everything yourself with little effort.
Thanks for all the suggestions and support! I've updated the OP with a suggestions/additions/extensions section, and I'll be working on updating that as more people comment on the thread.

Please learn how to use google. My grandfather knows how to, I think you can too.
I posted on this a while back. I recently started up a server called "classcraft." Although it is down until 1.9 for updating, I think you should check it out for it's basic idea. It might actually be a great addition to your server idea. :wink.gif:
(I thought you might want to see this after I saw what 2012dead said. :biggrin.gif:)
I'm currently working out something like this for my server (Actually it's just the same). Atm I don't have enough resources for more than 20-25 players, but in the beginning this will probably work.
I was going to use this week preparing rules and sorting out gameplay issues, and maybe try setting up a quick test start this Saturday. I already have a few people behind me to start up with me, and seeing this thread made me confident that this will probably work. Aulia is a great source of information, and I've learned a lot from just reading this thread.
If you are interested in working with me or have anything to add, feel free to reply or even PM me for that matter.
Well,... This seems now like a nice launching plataform made of ideas.
And, about the resources:
Yeah,... The natural reasources are a big problem. The abundance of them encourages the "hermitanism" (the word itself doesnt exist in english, but I try to mean "to be an hermit").
If you are alone, in a world where everybody is a potential threat, and you can bury yourself into the ground and plant your trees underground, and find all the resources that you could ever need in a net of caves,... Well, the game with others haves no sense. Lets play alone,... And NO. Thats not the point. If the game haves a Multiplayer Survival Mode, you should have the option to really have a test playing it with others. An option to cooperate, to not find all you need by yourself. Thats the problem. Ant the answer is a new World Generator (actually it doesnt exist...). Till that, the only posible world that I can find as a risk that ecourages the cooperation is a desert. A plain, endless, desert. With little oasis around.
Sparse wood, almost no stone, the need of really hard work to find materials.
The problem is that IRL you have to work hard, but the presence of resources is almost the same (except that you dont put a pot in your window and grows a pig or a cow in it). In games like Wurm, this is an exageration,... Where you can spend an entire day making a couple of tools (just like IRL,... but for that, I go out and I make my own no-virtual-tools, that persist even if I shutdown the PC). Thats not really funny.
In MC, the oposite side, you can make an axe in almost less than 1 minute. But making this just a quick task takes us to the this point: you can make a boat in 2 mins, and with that speed you can have whatever in little or no time. You really dont need a hand, and you can mine 3 blocks in 2 secs. You can build a house in 15 mins!!
If cooldowns and complexity cant be imporoved,... Well, lets charge the resources. After all, IRL is not really the lack of resources what makes you cooperate, but the hard work to get them that makes them sparse (cause if you can mine at the MC speed, I could have my bed made of diamonds right now).
Personally, I will not let my project go out to the sunlight till I could find a good map, balanced in resources.
I have delimitated my project in 3 stages: technic beta, social beta, and release. Right now, im in the first stage, and soon only the map will be the missing piece. I have the social theory (that I will test in the "social beta" stage, and correct after the results of that), I have extracted (for myself) the basic and irreducible social institutes, including the rough transport, and I have also interesting features like the posibility of book writing and the Vampirism plugin (that could make more interesting the things, but is for a second stage of the release) and the spells posibility.
I have just to wait, and to learn more.
Maybe we could share knowledges and resources for our projects. What about a "Social-Craft" society? :tongue.gif:
P.D.: I know that the most should be americans. I know that this maybe will not very funny but,... I encourage you to read Marx, for understanding about societies and their constitution along the time and the history. It really helped me, even if I really dont hit with the Socialism or the Communism (Im actually a truly convinced capitalist who believes in the aristocracy, or rule of the best prepared and most sensitive about the human needs and feelings).
My best thinker, anyway, is Foucault :3.
I'm not sure if I like the idea of limiting resources of a type to a single area, like respawning mines. It feels as though you're held up in a cell, getting a bit of something every set amount of time.
Actually, a better analogy would be an animal farm. Every day a pile of food is dumped at the center of the grazing area, so those who wait around and do nothing else get more food, and those who are doing other things and being productive get nothing. It rewards you for sitting around and doing nothing for a day, which isn't how Minecraft (or this server) should work.
Secondly, in a society with just enough (maybe even less than enough) resources to go around, you have to encourage the players to work as a group, for a collective goal. By rewarding specific players, the goal of the group disintegrates.
I think what would be most beneficial would be to write a map generator. I needs to:
1. Model the current Minecraft world, as to not plunge players into a strange, unfamiliar setting (which is why something like Primordial Desert would be a bad option)
2. Limit resources, and make "hermitism" a tough option (also by making "hermitism" harder, the risk of exile becomes much more severe) 3. Allow for the build-up of society and civilization, which is the key point of this experiment
Once a map is up, then the players need to start running their city, hopefully logging important events, setting up a governmental system. After a first test, we can continue to a new world with a specific requirement (e.x. a Democratic governmental system, a Libertarian system, etc.). I think it's important we don't forget about WHO will run the city that is built.
I'd appreciate if you could discuss the bolded points.
Thats true ... ):
I have let myself run for the "mine" idea from yesterday. But but but,... There is no World Generator (till now) T.T
This is imposible without that. And Im a Social Worker (at study, not yet one). I cant even understand a calculator.
This definatlely belongs in the starting up servers sub-forum... Anyway, I think my server and your server would work well together. We already have a nice team, graphics, website, and server set up. The website and server will be private while we set up. But in mine, Which could be a solution to your problems, you need to be a specific class to obtain specific materials. :wink.gif:
My Server in Progress is actually going to have 4 nations! One being completely player run. Players can appoint new Leaders and I am going to love to see how they handle the responsibility. The Server is going to be a huge RP experience and hopefully when it gets up ill remember this link and get it posted asap!

lots of shameless bumping....
What you guys need is some programmer who can help write a new world generator. I would love to help but I am not quite that proficient in code writing, but I aspire to be able to. Find one of those guys and you'll be well on your way!
This is an amazing idea, but you said something about killing the king. If you kill the king, do you become the king, or does it automatically become elections?

It depends how the players want to run it. The goal is that the players need to sustain themselves as a group while trying to obtain their own goals as well (become the King, for example).
Map generation code... maybe there's someone I know who could do it. I might ask some of my friends about it.
