Hi. I run a bukkit server for Minecraft 1.3_01 and it actually works well. I am more interested in expanding, however, to a wider audience than just me and my friends. Or possibly i'll just make a new server that is offered to everyone.
Either way, the ip (or at least whatever you type in to connect to the server) is a long string of numbers as you would expect. I think thats just the external ip.
On other big servers, they have actual website names (or at least it appears that way) that you type in to connect to the server. For example, :Diamond:themmoproject.sytes.net instead of :Coal:67.242.....etc.:Coal:
How do you change this? I don't want to give out my real external ip everywhere if i want a large audience for my server. Thanks!!!
Hey, you can go to a website such as http://www.no-ip.com/ and register for a free ip there. All you have to do is make an account. There are already premade addresses you can choose from while being a free member and there are some reserved for the paying members. There's a lot more features but your gonna have to go check it out yourself.

Ok thanks. So lets say i get a domain from there called http://www.example.com. How would i change the server setup (or set up a new server) so that users connect via THAT ip? cause i don't really remember a specific spot of where you would put that...
You'll need to purchase a domain or use a free service such as no-ip or dyndns, from there just change it's A-Record to match that of your server (Your external IP).
Totally ninja'd :sad.gif:
So i think you were hinting at what i was questioning fireblade about. What do you mean really when you say to just change it's A-Record?
Depending on who you buy the domain from you'll have the option to adjust the DNS Records or "Zone File" for your domain. One of the things you can adjust is adding or removing records, in this case you'd want to add an "A-Record" and point a subdomain, for example something.domain.com, to your servers IP.
Or you can adjust your sites main A-Record (if the domain is strictly for connecting to the server and does not also host a website) to the IP of your server to accomplish the same thing.
