i had the same problem as you did, but i opened the server software and then connected and it worked.
problem two; my world is a 16x16 block of land and i die if i go over the edge, what does this mean?
This means the world is not loaded, wait and it should load eventually. Otherwise your computer isn't up to it.
I get this message in terminal whenever I try to sing on the the server (highlighted)

Please help!!!
exact same problem, me nor outside friend can connect with same server message appearing, port fowarded, firewall open, everything up to 1.7.3, have tried exe and jar file. but no success with any of the above
for those who have connection issues, i want to point out that at random my server decided nothing would connect. Now I have everything setup correctly, ports, firewalls, everything. And this for the life of me stumped me for the last 4 hours of my life. It hurts, i know.
FOR WINDOWS VISTA/7
Anyways i figured it out, and i thought i might share in case this helps others as well! My issue: WINDOWS FIREWALL! bane of all evils. So my first step was to disable it completely, but even that doesn't work, there was something amiss between router communication and windows within both of the firewalls. i had to dig deeper @_@!
so i learned about advanced firewall settings, you can access this by going to:
control panel > administrative tools > windows firewall with Advanced Security
using this option allows for an additional setting in opening your port on your firewall called 'edge traversal' which allows traffic coming into your network to bypass a NAT router setting, pretty handy :biggrin.gif: you get access to this radio button as such:
key:
> = hit next button
select inbound connections on the left plane, on the right plane select 'new rule' >
select 'port' >
select TCP, and 'specific port' and enter the port you need to forward (minecraft defaults to 25565) >
select 'allow connection' thingy >
make sure only 'Domain' is selected, deselect public and private >
name your connection something whimsical like 'quacks port 25565'>
select your new forward port in the inbound connection list >
double click to open >
navigate to the 'Advanced Tab' >
check the radio button 'Allow Edge Traversal' >
Hit 'apply' and you should be good to go!
Again this was for windows vista/7 it worked for me and i hope it works for you!
any questions PM me and i will try to answer them in a timely fashion :happy.gif:;;
So I gave my IP to my friend and signed it perfectly fine, but I can't connect to my own server! i tried typing in localhost, the port number, my IP, and my computer's IP. I'm super stuck
i believe bad login means that two people or windows are logged in under the same account, not neccessarily connected to the server but logged in, if you didnt buy it then it would have said user not premium. hope this helped.
one way to fix bad login and user not premium is running your server in offline mode. :Flint and Steel: quote from wraithlord_koto
darkholm is worth getting banned from lik 15 servers for griefing. and by the way i believe i have a mental disorder that is made up and i call it smart idiot, i was also born without any common sense what so ever, but i'm still right about a lot of stuff.

Do you think this will work for WIndows XP?????????
When I try to sign onto my own server the same message shows up every time, "Failed to connect to server Connection refused"
I tried adding the port and different IP's and i still get this.
I have followed a variety of different steps to fix this such as, opening up my port and forwarding it, trying different IP's, unblocking the port from my firewall, making sure all my IP's were correct with my router manager and I'm stumped on what I should do.
If anyone has any ideas on what I should do or what I'm doing wrong, I would much appreciate the feedback.
Been tying at this for days.
Hey; try adding the port to the end of localhost
For Example localhost:25565
For mine I had to put in localhost:3363
(I think if its 25565 you don't have to but don't quote me on that)
Remove the IP from the server properties file. That should not be there.
And then to log in, you use the local IP of the computer hosting minecraft (192....) followed by the forwarded port.
i have the same or different question so i can connect through localhost but i can't find the ip i type in my ip and its in the hosting computer and it says mine craft server connection refused please help!
You connect to the IP on the hosting computer through localhost. If you want others to connect, use port forwarding. There's many guide here: http://portforward.com , and if you need help, I'm sure that making a new thread would get the attention needed.
What I don't get is if I'm connecting correctly
I typed [My IP]:25565 and it didn't work. o_o
When I used localhost it worked, but I want to be able to have my friend online.

The reason why I put "server-ip" to blank is because tons of people say to keep it blank, even the minecraft wiki. So I'm confused, do I put anything there?would it help that i have doubles of every minecraft file? i have ops.txt on both my desktop and in my "minecraft_server" folder, along with all the other files.
This means that the server you are trying to connect to is down...
I get this message when I try to get onto a server (which isn't mine), but the server is public and is always running. I know it is, because my friends are on it...

When I say this message, I mean the 'connection refused: connect' message...
Where exactly do you type in Localhost. In Direct Contact, or in Server.properties on Notepad. I seriously don't know what to do. ;(Omg Cant connect to my server. Say connection time refused or something. I went to server.properties and change some of the things on it but nothing happened. Help. What do I change, what do I do?!?!?! Heeeelllpppp!!
So... just download another minecraft? Because I've had this error before, but it just should take time to get it fixed. Even if mojang says that you can connect to minecraft multiplayer servers, It will still give you that message. The best thing you can do is stop trying to log into the servers (Since I'm having the same problem, I'm doing this too), but keep the list up for an hour or two. Don't do anything on minecraft, but just keep it up with nothing else running on your computer. Sometimes, its good to restart your computer during/after you leave it up. Then exit out of your minecraft, go to help.mojang.com, and look at the status of minecraft multiplayer servers. If it's all good and healthy, try logging into minecraft. Don't try and log into servers too quickly. I'm not doing this with my own server, but I'm connecting to semi-private servers.
Best thing you can do is not to rush your Minecraft.
Hope this helps!

Ok, So me and my brother want to play minecraft together. He has all his friends on his server and himself. But for some reason I cant join the server. (Note: Were in the same house and both of our computers are wired, not wireless connection) Please help!
I'm having the same prob on my server, but it's hosted on FreeMinecraftHost.net, so I won't be able to change any of the properties file or anything. Just throwin' that out there. PLEASE HELP

Typically refused connection is a firewall interfering.
