Ahh, crap. I had pretty abandoned this guide since no one had replied to it for a month. Now that I see people are still reading, I guess I'll keep tabs on it from now on. Sorry to all the former people who have asked questions, and haven't received responses.
Ello!
So I just did your instructions on the non-modded SMP server. I try localhost, and it says
connection refused:connect
Why?
I even put my IP, but it still does not let me connect? = I'm stumped
And i just read your reply to a person who has a problem similar to mines. I put my IP on the notepad thing. But how to you forward the server port?
...
Disregard my reply, I can connect, but only if I do the Minecraft_Server thing. Is there any way that I could connect without running that?
You can also connect by using the Bukkit software. Normally people only use the bukkit software when they want to apply mods to their servers, but it can also be used as a replacement for Notch's server software. Either way though, you absolutely need to forward your ports. This can be done by logging into your router and changing settings in there. You will need the password to log in too. If you live with your parents, they will most likely have it. If you don't, then your ISP should have set it up for you when you bought your internet service.
Hope this helps(assuming you still need an answer after all this time). :smile.gif:

I'm setting up a SMP server for me and a few friends, but the one thats trying to connect now cant get on. And I've done everything here, and along with the wiki page for setting one up too, but still doesn't work.
The error message that he gets is "connection timed out". Now I can connect but when i do it takes time to load the terrain and the blocks that I destroy come back or take time to drop so I can pick them up, and also seem that I destroy them faster too.
Edit: Also when I check to see if its the port has forwarded it says it hasn't or isn't reachable. So that seems to be the only problem on my side that I'm having.
And another thing I read was that it causes the problems I'm having if I run the server on the same computer I'm playing on, is that true?
Any help you can provide is welcome. :biggrin.gif:
Aside from a possible port forward issue, it sounds like you're lagging really hard. What are you running the server off of, and how much RAM do you have on the system you're running the server on? Also, if anyone is trying to connect to your server using a pirated copy of Minecraft, then that person will not be able to join your server.
Can you do a tutorial of how to add mods, to a server ?
I can do this at a later date, yes. I'm pretty sure I have provided information on how to do this though...
Arlic : Hey man, what are you playin'? Ruthius : Minecraft. Arlic : What's Minecraft? Ruthius : It's -the- Minecraft, dude. You've never heard of Minecraft? Arlic : No... Ruthius : Dude, you can like, build whatever you want. Arlic : Can I build statues of myself? Ruthius : Sure. Arlic : Sweeeet.
When I enter ipconfig /all in cmd it says ipconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file, what am I doing possibly wrong?
Hey I am trying to set up a server for my friend and I. My ip (which I set to static) is 192.168.0.125. I can connect to my server that way,but my friend can't. I also tried to have my friend connect through my WAN Ip which is 68.96.78.101 and he can't connect through that. Can you please help I have tried so many different things.
You should use the WAN and have your friend use the static IP. Not sure that will solve your issue but that is how you start. Then be sure you have set the port access not only in game, but also with your router as well as windows firewall and whatever virus program you use. Be sure you are both playing the same version of the game. Other then that I don't have any clues for you. Hope it works.
Right now i have a vanilla server for a couple of friends and i but i want to upgrade to a bukkit server but in the past mybukkit servers have stopped working and i dont know why. However my current vanilla server works fine. Should I try to make a new bukkit server and can i use the map from my vanilla server in the bukkit one?
i got it to work for a while but now it says: WARNING] **** FAILED TO BIND TO PORT!
[WARNING] The exception was: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind
[WARNING] Perhaps a server is already running on that port?
wat happened?
Hey 1 thing co'z im not really a computer WHIZ co'z im only an addict (COMPUTER!!!) how may i portforward my server? sorry im very new to this stuff. (NOT NOO :tongue.gif: lawl)
Thank you for this Ruthius. Very good and informative guide. I was able to get my server running in less than 10 min:)
I do have a few questions though-->
When I run my server, does it automatically get on a server list? I dont want to be on a list, not yet anyways. I just want to host a server for my friends.
And I have allso notised that when I enter my world, there are some blocks that I cant destroy. I mean they do destroy, but pops right back in place. And if I move a few block either way, they breake normally again... Why is this?
And for my WAN-IP, should I put that in the properties, or just give it to whoever I want to have at my server?
Allso when I put my local IP or WAN-IP in the server ip in properties it wont start..
Are you going to do a tutorial on Bukkit? (Please do) ^.^
i know your problem this is the spawn zone you cant edit it if your not an admin of the server to make yourself admin
type on your minecraft_server.exe the command op (your player name)
first of all, thanks for all the help. all of the other guides ive seen expect you to know what everything is, but this one was more detailed. i do have one problem though. the server works when people are on my connection but not when they are away. i saw the part about the 2 different ips i need to use but when i found the one for people away from my connection my friends still couldnt connect to the server. am i doing something wrong, or is it just a problem for anyone? please write back, im anxious to get this up and running, thank you.
