Now if I want to host lets say 2-3 people(at most 5), would it be easiest to just host on my own computer or rent a dedicated server?
I leave my computer on at all times so if my friends wanted to play when I wasn't on that wouldn't be a problem.
I have 6 gigs and I honestly don't know what other specs would be needed. If I have to rent a server I would but I don't want to pay more than 10-15 a month if possible since it's not for many people at all.
If you feel comfortable enough with port forwarding and such just host it off your own box. I do that and can easily have 8 of us on with a similar setup.
I wouldn't run the client and server on the same machine.
Things will be fine for you, but laggy for others.
I host Minecraft on a 2.4ghz Intel w/ a gig of ram, supporting about 6 people.
Even though the stats are less than my main computer, there was a performance increase because it was dedicated to MC.

Thanks for any info you guys can give me.
