all that means is that:
1) your connection is too slow
2) the server's connection is too slow
3) if your running the server on the same ip, then from the transative property of equality, we can conclude that your connection cannot handle a server... sorry :/
I have similar issues and would appreciate any suggestions.
I've run the server code on both Mac OSX 10.6 and Windows XP SP3. The Mac is a quad CPU / 8 core box and is plenty fast enough to run minecraft client & server. The PC is a 4 GB dual core box, older but it runs the minecraft client smoothly. Both machines are connected to a very lightly loaded 100Mb/s LAN.
With the minecraft server on the Mac we always see either "Lost connection" or "Login timed out" in the console and have never managed to successfully login from XP or locally from OSX.
With the server running on XP, the only successful connection I've had was with the client running locally using "127.0.0.1:25565" as a connection string. "<IP>:25565" and all other attempts just give me the same issues as above. In other words a client on the PC can connect to the server on the PC, but no other machines can (defeating the purpose of running a server!)
Given that I'm seeing the login attempts show up in the server consoles I know that a connection is being made so I doubt it's a network issue. I just can't think of what else to try.
I forwarded the ports, I don't understand. :I
