Due to my current hosting situation, (only 2-3 friends who join) the latency due to my 1.5MB down and .4mb up
I am experiencing latency bursts upon login, travel, and out of syncing issues(literally taking 2 minutes for a message to pop up at times). What I'm wondering is if there is a type of server software that can possibly reduce latency in any way.
This latency only occurs upon login and had huge bursts for about 30-45 seconds upon login (usually ends, sometimes doesn't), which is sometimes essential time to recoup if there is a creeper lurking around.
I've read that turning off monster spawns reduces the latency incredibly (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=142318), however, I want to have monsters and junk.
Is there a possible way to reduce the mob/animal spawning, rather than completely (latency friendly way?)?
Also wondering, If view distance for players is lowered, does that also mean the player is being sent less chunks/less mobs? but this also could lead to more issues such as chunks needed to be loading/unloading more frequently.
I've already allocated 1GB of RAM, (4gb of RAM total in my system)
If I allocate more than 1gb of RAM, the server will not start, as it gives an error.
However, the server never goes over 200MB of ram usage, So I'm certain it isn't a RAM issue.
I'm looking for ways that could possibly reduce latency, like, limiting the amount of mobs that spawn from 200, to rather say 20, or so, I'd rather make mobs a rare occurance, than a crazy abundance that causes lag issues. Animals I do not mind, they just hang around and chill, and not as many spawn compared to how many monsters spawn. Or possibly a server software that does less server checks. I understand that everything is server-side due to hackers. But the amount of data uploaded and downloaded is honestly waaaay too much.
You can't change the spawn rate on a vanilla Minecraft server. Like ryanshawty mentioned before, your upload rate is severely lacking and is going to be a problem no matter how much RAM or mobs you have.
Last night I tried hosting through the internet rather than a hamachi connection, and it seemed to improve things. I also re-enabled monsters, that barely changed anything, so i guess your right.
Sadly, the upload and download speeds I am getting are the highest I can get in my area, yes, i know, it's a damn shame.
I only ran a server with hey0, sorry for misleading information.
sallright guy, now I know hey0 can control spawn rates, thank you :happy.gif:
I've read that notch is creating a new save file format, do any of you think this will change the way the server may upload & download information?
If not, I believe (if he has the ability to) he should attempt to optimize the way the server traffics data. I've read people going over their DL/UL caps due to minecraft, which is practically insane.
