Is it possible to join a server with a mod no one else has? It's a private server, and I have two mods no one else has, do I have to delete them? And if I do, what would happen to my singleplayer games with all of that saved information?
Compendium of Useful Guides A Compendium of useful guides to help run a successful server
Introduction
Most people hate Sticky's blocking up the top of their page. A few are OK, but once you start getting more, they just block the top of the page. If we put this in to perspective with the 'Server Administration' section, we can see there are already quite a few sticky's. If we were to give all the helpful guides a sticky, this forum section would be clogged up.
That's why, we're making this Compendium. It's a central place for you to find all the useful info you need, to help run your server. Just look through the list, and help yourself to Gourmet knowledge.
Compendium How to Build and Maintain a Good Server
This is a nice lengthy guide, on the basics, of setting up the administrative and creative side of your server. This guide is not about setting up the technical side of your server, but rather how to keep it running in the long time, with helpful tips. A must read.

How to Set Up a Server [NEW!] [0.1.1]
This great guide showcases how to setup the 'technical' side of your server. It's very simple to read, and has lots of tips and tricks to make the process a whole lot easier. It is currently outdated slightly, but there is not much difference in setting up a server, between the updates so this should be fine. If anyone is willing to make something more Up-to-date, submit it!
FAQ - Solutions Collection
Another FAQ to help get your server running properly, which focuses on different areas to the one already posted. Neatly done and presented.

I'm sure there are plenty more guides out there, waiting to get recognition! If you think you or someone else has a useful guide, that should be mentioned, please PM a forum moderator with a link and a quick description of the guide. If it's original and hasn't already been mentioned, and it's a useful guide, I'll incorporate it into my Compendium!
On my server we have been looking for a rank mod. We can't find one that is good. We want around 3-4 ranks that are only changed by the admin or an op. Please help! Great guide btw!
The monthly rates are dependant on if you host the MC server on your own machine at home or office, or if you rent a server slot from one of the service poviders located on some hightech datacenters
Owned server, on your OWN machine, depandant on your computer's resources is FREE (beyond obvious fee's for interwebz service etc)
Rented server on a datacenter: Not your machine, service may vary from provider to provider, support is important, make sure that you getting what you need (dedicated RAM, HDD space, control panels etc..)
Not mine, but very useful. Automatically portforwards and starts your server. It is a .bat, so easy to check for viruses, and the port is adjustable inside the .bat. The downside to it being a .bat is that it's Windows only, but still, I found it very helpful.

just one question, my friend said you have to pay monthly to keep a server up, how much is it?
Only if someone else hosts it for you like Multiplay or Creeperhost or any others. If you host it yourself, then there is no cost other than that of getting the server or maintaining it.

Given the time and will to maintain it, and the Bukkit server, PermissionsEX, GroupManager, and any other permissions plugins should work. The plugins are for Bukkit. The wiki should explain most of everything...

You should be able to, as long as they don't modify your client in a way that the server prohibits. EX: USING zombe's fly mod on a server that doesn't allow flying. (Not the USING. I'm not sure if it has changed (Probably not) but you should be able to join, so long as you don't use them) If you told me what mods, i could help a little more..
Not enough RAM, just buy some, its very cheap
I actually bought my computer parts from this website, www.Ebuyer.com, I promise this aint a spam ,trying to help
8 Gig would be best amount
Depending on how many players you have, it can be fine. For 1-4 players it should be sufficient as long as you are playing Vanilla. Now, if you want to play on it, and run the server on the same machine and the computer has ONLY 256MB Then you are in trouble..
Either keep your computer on 24/7 or buy a hoster, for example, from our Minecraft Server Hosting section.
