I've read through this entire page, and I see the Atheros/Win7 combination problem, but I have the exact same issue, except im on a Mac with a Dlink. My server worked for about a day, then people keep connecting/disconnecting exactly the same as previously stated. Any Mac users out there?
Not sure how much help this all will be, but I had some very similar issues while I was getting my server set up and after trying many solutions, I did something and it all started working just fine. I'm not sure which of the two things I did at the same time worked, but here they are. Maybe it's a good starting point for you guys:
1) Make sure the driver for your Network Adaptor is updated. Don't trust the auto-update function. I did and it didn't work. Once I manually updated (got the new driver, told it I had the disk, and directed it to the location instead of letting it do anything) it seemed to work.
2) There is a setting in your Adaptor that can be changed which semed to help things. Going to want to go to your device manager and select your adaptor. Go to the properties menu. Go to the advanced tab. Find 'Transmit Buffers'. Change the setting to 512 if it is lower. Mine was set to 256. Once I changed this setting, server went up and people could connect with no issues whatsoever.
Not sure if this is something already been covered in this topic as I didn't read all the posts, just skimmed. I found this info in older posts when I had issues and it seemed to work. Good Luck.
EDIT: This was done on a Windows Vista PC. Not sure if it would work on any other system.
I have been following this whole thread and I am also using that same ethernet adapter on my pc that is hosting the server, the difference is that I am running Win XP ome SP3 and not win 7 like most of you.
So I have two pc's:
Win XP Home SP3
NIC: Atheros
Win XP pro SP3
NIC: Realtek RTL81618C
I notice that regardless of which one is the host or the client, it will experience the exact same issue.
I have also noticed something else that was not mentioned:
When the connection fails, the ethernet NIC *'freezes' on the PC that is running the server.exe - what I mean when I say that it freezes is that the NIC in 'Network Connections' shows as enabled but when I do ipconfig /all, I can nothing... No info or anything. Repairing fails at the first stage and disabling the ethernet connection doesn't respond.
I am going to update the driver now which will hopefully fix this mess. I'll let you know.
Install MineOS on a VM. Took me about 15 minutes (mostly waiting for download/installations) to get it up and running after screwing around for a few hours with the normal minecraft server on Win7. I feel it is a much nicer solution as well - can manage and update the server from a web interface.
I have the same problem as well. The ports are forwarded and the correct ip address is being used. The server is on a 32-bit Vista with 4Gs of ram. I have fios, so there is not an internet connection problem. Ever users in my LAN can not connect. I have reinstalled the server many times and it still does not work. Lastly, this is my first time setting up a server.
You can add me on to that list of people with this issue too, I've spent about 3 weeks trying to figure out why I couldn't get people to stay joined on my server. I was starting to think that it might have been that Win 7 64 bit that was at fault, cause through browsing through the threads on the forums, a lot of the people here had a 64bit system, but I too have that ethernet connector.
I don't have the patience nor the attention span to read through this whole post so I'm just going to pitch in my problems on this subject. When I first got port forwarding right I flipped so I started up my normal Minecraft server not Hey0 or any other server type just pure vanilla. Being on MCserver list I was way down at 0.00% uptime so it took awhile for someone to join, and eventually someone did no problem a couple people had tried to join before but on the GUI it said "Lost connection" or "Took to long to log in" so I though whatever someone joined they did it right.Well no one else had joined after that the only person who made it in besides me had left because it was pretty late and no one else was joining so I shut down the server and went to bed. Next day when I setup the server about 6-7 people tried joining and on the GUI it says "Lost connection" I couldn't understand and sometimes when I tried logging in there was lot's of lag and Minecraft Launcher would "Not respond" and after awhile it would say "Lost connection" but sometimes it DOES let me in. So I dunno it's quite annoying and I've only recently gotten a Minecraft server so I dunno if this happen'd before the latest update. DONE TYPING YAY!
Unfortunately, I am having the same issue with my server lately. I am hoping that the servers are just down for a short time and then will be fixed very soon. For the last two days, I have started a server that I normally just play on with a friend and having the server running but not being able to connect to it via 'localhost' or my IP address. My friend cannot connect either with the errors:
I believe my ports are forwarded correctly because I was playing on this exact same server just 3 days ago. Firewall exception made for it and everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem. Same error codes and all. I was able to connect a couple days ago, then I went out of town and came back tonight and couldn't connect. I'm pretty sure I saw the game updating when I finally was able to log into minecraft tonight, maybe I need to update the server. I also saw another post about Notch moving to a biger server, so that probably has something to do with it as well.
Sorry, not much help in solving the problem... just wanted to let you know your not the only one that this has happened to recently. If I find the solution I'll let you know.

I am having the same issues i have had two server running with no issues no hardware or software changes have been made during this time.
Windows 7 64 bit
Custom built computer
-running port 25566
VisualAdmin v 4.0
Used only bc of the bottle neck below on my server
Windows Server 2008
-Dell Poweredge 2650 Server
3 gb ram
70 gb hdd
dual hyper-thread 2.4 ghz processor
And the bottle neck is the wifi card used bc their is no either net connection remotely close by. Once i run internet to the server or get a faster wifi card then this will be primary again.
Settings check list:
-All ports are open and set up right
-As well as firewall settings.
-Everything i am using is up to date.
Note:
localhost doesn't work either
I can connect to the server after trying to connect sometimes up to 15 times then it will connect me same with anyone who tries to connect and then randomly boot a player. Everything was working great before the other night when minecraft updated and then was down for for a time then nothing has worked scene.
Not only can i not connect to the server but it is a crap shoot to connect to minecraft.net and this is the same problem for all my friends all running mac, linux, xp, window 7, ect.... and with different internet speeds and providers.

Guys, this is a very specific issue that many of you aren't having. This is directly related to Windows 7 and Atheros network adapters. If you don't have both of those, you do not have this exact problem. Sorry, but you'll have to go elsewhere.
As for the solution, the only fix so far seems to be simply to buy a new network card. It's not the best solution, but I can confirm it works.
EXACTLY same problem.
I can connect my server by typing my IP address or just localhost,
and the external players are shown in my server log.
BUT they are disconnected with the log 'disconnect.genericReason' except myself.
Window 7 with Atheros card.
I'm so frustrated.
Update: Finally, I added a new (external) Ethernet card to my desktop, and now it works.
Sorry to somewhat necro this beast, but ive never had problems till I upgraded my hardware recently to windows 7 x64 with an Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 NIC. So bump for a fix.

I know this is old, but I'm sure someone will read this and want the solution. I know I read it, this is one of the many threads that kept me from going insane knowing other people had the issue.
...anyways, I solved it! I posted it on my site so it's easier for for people on google to find, plus it looks better there than on here.
