Ok I've been looking for ways to decrease the server lag, but I haven't seen a comprehensive guide on how to do so. Upgrading our server would be a bit out of our price range so I need to look for ways to improve the server's operation. (Lag happens with 5+ players)
Here's my specs:
OS: Ubuntu 10.04
CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5506 @ 2.13GHz (Quad Core)
RAM: 2gb's (Minecraft uses 1gb currently)
Network: 5Mbit dedicated
Hard Drive: Large enough (100+gb)
I know I can increase my RAM (I'm going to once the server is empty), but what other options do I have to improve efficiency? Here's thing's I've heard of but haven't tested.
[*:292nbbvi]Turn saves to off (save-off) and only save-all on a time interval
Stops the server from writing to the HD except when you want to write the changes. (Example every 30 minutes)
[*:292nbbvi]Edit the map with MCEdit and delete unused chuncks
Make the map smaller by removing things that aren't being used.
Anything else that I (or others) can do to improve their server without making hardware changes? Does anyone know how much the above will help with lag?
Yea I read that there are some things that are causing problems for stability, but I'd like to be able to do everything on my end so we can play through the problems until a fix is released.
