I've been trying to set up a server that myself and my friends can run/access by ourselves but I keep running into problems.
I have downloaded the server client, set up the IP,Port, etc, forwarded the port using "simple port forwarding", and run the server.
What happens is that I am able to access and play on the server but when anyone else tries to log onto my server they get stuck on "connecting" until the connection times out.
I asked around other successful servers as to what the problem might be and they said it might be that the port is "Blocked" to outside access.
I am not a computer expert unfortunatly so I do not know how to access the port my server is using and then "open" it, can anyone tell me where to access and then open the port. If not that is there any command I can do though "cmd" that will enable the port to be opened.
Any advice is appreciated, please do not reply with "Look it up" as I haven't been able to find anything spefic enough to help as of yet.
I have the exact same problem, I went through the same steps as you too... I have tried the Hamachi Situation and it did not work for me, and I have also tried a few CMD commands, nothing works for me. I'm gonna check my topic now to see if I have a reply. If it is something useful I will post back here to give you the link to it...
In the server properties, i find it best to leave out the "server-ip" option, just leave it blank.
That IP address looks like it might be a local IP address.
Try going to http://www.whatsmyip.org this will display your "external" IP address, which is what your friends will need to use to connect to your server.
You will still need to use the 192.x.x.x address though (the one you have there now)
I tried adding "public=true" to the Properties file in the minecraft server folder. Unfortunatly this did not fix the problem. I also tried downloading the hosting program "Putty" mentioned in the tutorials unfortunatly it also fails to link up with my computer after I open it and try entering IP and Port...
Obviously this is a pretty frustrating problem, so I'm asking has anyone else managed to make a server work WITHOUT 3rd party programs; if so please tell me what you did to make it work.

Thank very much for that advice, I will look up the IP and try that next time I have an oppurtunity (around Thursday) if it works I'll make sure to post it.
I went through and found the server's external IP though the servers "page" then forwarded my computers individual IP through port forwarding.
After that all my friends had to do was input the servers IP and it routed it straight to my machine and BOOM: we had a functioning multiplayer server.
Thanks to all that posted suggestions onto this thread and I hope any info shown is helpful.
A member of the forums recently petitioned me for help as he explained that he looked at many many pages for help with his Server and mine was the only one that helped him out. So I am posted the advice I gave him for people like me who are NOT tech savvy. Hopefully other people will find this post helpful. (feel free to amend my advice if you know better ways to explain).
"Alright, I am NO expert but I will try to help as best as I can.
Go into (network) tab and select your router, this should show you make, model etc. Then right click on it and hit "properties" this should let you see the devices webpage. Click on the blue highlighted IP it gives you, this is an INTERNAL ip that should read something like 192.168.xxx.xxx.
If you have done this you should see the routers page, now here is where things get tricky.
Different routers obviously have different setups, my router which is BELKIN will show the routers address when you hit "home" at the top. That should show your "servers" address which will be an IP DOESN'T start with "192.168.etc".
Now for the Port Forwarding which is as important as your server address. See if you give them your router address it should only send them as far as your actual server, but then the signal will stop there and do nothing. (which might explain your problem)
To port forward in your router look for a tab that takes you to that menu, in a BELKIN router the tab you need to hit is "Virtual Servers" then you will see a menu of ports that are being forwarded to and from your router "like Xbox 360 for example". Type in 25565 in both outgoing and incoming boxes and then type in the IP address of what computer is running the server.
Once this is done people should be able to log in from externally.
If your running on a different type of server look for things that hint at forwarding like "port forwarding" "virtual server" or even "forwarding".
I sincerely hope that helps, like you I had trouble running my server because I was trying to have other programs forward the port for me and it just wasn't working. Also the best way to find your servers address is to look on its page, as those Lookup programs gave me the WRONG address.
Contact me again if your problem persists and I'll try to explain further
