Hi just wondering if anyone can help, followed the first step, trying to set up a server for me and my brother at my house but how do i open the world, what do i type in or we
Thanks

open the minecraft_server.jar and the world will automatically be generated in the directory that its placed it. For example if you open it on your desktop, your desktop will be spammed with a bunch of fires being generated by the server.
Thank you so much! This has been EXTREMELY helpful. This should be stickied! It answers almost every question anyone could have about starting a server.
Almost. I just want to know this: How do I change the location all of the files the server creates are saved to? Right now they always save to /Users/Myusername no matter where I put the minecraft_server.jar. I use Hmod and Runecraft, so I have some extra files other than the ones normally created. I want to put them all in one folder so I can keep my files organized.

Weird, I just downloaded a new minecraft_Server.jar and moved it to different places and it created the files correctly. If you're using hmod, doesnt he have his own .jar file? Maybe the save location is in the server properties (i havent used the new hmods).
Otherwise the default solution would be to redownload and move the files from the old server into one folder with the fresh version of minecraft_mod.jar. So that you keep all your properties and banned players and such but just get new server software to fix this bug.
i cant get it to work.
first it says that it cant open teh .jar file
then when i downloaded the minecraft server gui thing it says something like Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute
help?
.....
Have no iea what that error means. Are you opening it from terminal or just double clicking on the jar?
I'm getting this same error - I'm opening the .jar file, not the exe. The java version on my system is 1.6.02 according to "java -version"
I tried with the wrapper but it gives the same error.
Ok, another question:
I started my server back with Alpha. I play on my mac while it's running the server (It causes lag for everyone else, but I don't have another computer I can use). I would have up to 4 people, including me, and it would run just fine. Once it was updated for Beta, though, I started having this problem:
When even one person is on outside of my local network, it takes up so much bandwidth that no one else in my house can use the internet. I can't even access the internet on my computer. This never happened with Alpha.
So is there anything I can do to fix this? Is it a glitch, or does MC just use a lot of bandwidth?
thanks for any help!
P.S. I'm going to try running the server on a Windows computer later today; I'll post if it works.

I dont think you can fix that and just have to wait for notch to optimize it. It sucks...

Once that is set up, you’re not done yet, go back to terminal and enter
Chmod +x *path to your BootAlphaServer.command* and press enter
Now click on BootAlphaServer.command and the server should boot up.
when i clicked on the bootserver.command this happened
xxxxxx$ /Users/xxxxxxx/Desktop/Minecraft/BootBetaServer.command ; exit;

Look at your .command file again, and make sure the .command is at the end of the file path. It looks like you have it set to a folder which wont make sense to the computer.
so you'd probably want
/Users/xxxxxx/Desktop/Minecraft/*your command file*
It says "Your Java is working." and then Java Version: Java 6 Update 22, OS X 10.6.4
Well if it makes you feel anybetter this seems to be a common problem. :tongue.gif: Typical of minecraft forums, people who found the problem either dont say or are very non specific about it. So just gonna have to spit ball it.
I wasnt sure if you said if you were opening from terminal (java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui) or double clicking on the .jar. I recommend always opening it with the no gui command. If you've already tried this ignore me. Otherwise the only other solutions i can think of are java errors and reinstalling the latest update of java (or java all together), repair disk permissions (applications -> utilities -> disk utilitity). Sorry that I cant be of much help. If you do find a solution please tell me.
Sorry everybody for my responses that keep getting later and later. School has started again and since I dont run a server anymore because of port forwarding issues (although i will try portmap, if it works ill love you forever.) I dont spend as much time on the forums making my support more and more out of date. I will help in any way I can. However more complex problems probably wont get fixed.
Well, everything works up to the point in which I have to click on BootAlphaServer.command, because my Mac says I don't have the right "access privileges" Can you help? It has nothing to do with the server or anything, just a problem on the mac: How to I get the right Access privileges?
Hey there, me and my friends are trying to set up a small LAN server just for us to play on. I've been trying to run everything from my Macbook Pro but I can't seem to get a server set up. I get in Terminal and
cd /Users/Name/Downloads/minecraft-server
That takes Terminal into that directory but then when I tell it
I'm on mac, and when I try to use the Start.command to run hey0, I get this:

I've tried with and without the "nogui" and I followed every guide I could find exactly and nothing works. Has anybody seen this before?

Oh god, this exact problem seems to be coming up more, and I have NO idea even what it is or even how to fix it.

hmod stopped updating his mod and bukkit is replacing his mod. You might want to look into bukkit.
I am having trouble adding ram. I followed all the steps on a lot of places but i still get this coming up:
/Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/Bootbetaserver.command: line 1: cd: Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer: No such file or directory
Something is wrong with your file path, which means you have a small typo in there somewhere, double check the file path and see if you spelled everything exactly right. The terminal is very picky about that :smile.gif:

Well the thing is i tried to do this on terminal:
Last login: Fri Jan 21 19:38:28 on ttys000
XX-Laptop:~ Xxxxxx$ chmod +x Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer
chmod: Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer: No such file or directory
XX-Laptop:~ Xxxxxx$
I thought that was how i path it but clearly not.
Also i cant see any typos on my Bootbetaserver.command so what is the problem?
Thanks.
Your MinecraftServer looks like a folder, you need to have the file extension at the end of it.
Your MinecraftServer looks like a folder, you need to have the file extension at the end of it.
So should i change my bootbetaserver.command to:
cd Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/bootbetaserver java –Xmx1024M –Xms1024M –jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
and then put that in chmod +x on terminal?
Thanks btw swook your a huge help to all.
ah, sheiße. Forget what I said about the file extension. Keep it as
Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer
Sorry, I forget what I wrote...haha....
Anyway...
For some reason it doesnt see your Minecraft server folder, did you drag and drop the folder containing minecraftServer into terminal and copy and paste the file path that shows up? That should be perfect.
Maybe its something else in the file path, but im 90% sure that there must be some kind of tiny typo in the path.
Ok well in terminal i draged the file in and got this:
chmod +x /Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer
/Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/Bootbetaserver.command: line 1: cd: Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer: No such file or directory
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ?Xmx1024M

at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:248)
Im still getting this:No such file or directory
So i tried with bootbetaserver at the end and i got this:
XX-Laptop:~ Xxxxxx$ chmod +x /Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/Bootbetaserver.command
XX-Laptop:~ Xxxxxx$
I assume it worked but i still got the NOT ENOUGH RAM warning.
I take this to mean there's a typo but i cant find it is there something i'm doing wrong STILL?
If you can sort this out i will be so very grateful swook, thanks :smile.gif: .
Ok, well the first thing that I think I can fix most easily is your RAM issue.
NoClassDefFoundError: ?Xmx1024M
Go into the .command file and replace all the hyphens you find with your own. For some reason, god knows why, the hyphens are rejected by some terminals when you copy paste that Xmx command in there.
So you're saying that chmod +x /Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/Bootbetaserver.command works. Im not use what file or folder you dragged into terminal, cause it doesnt look line MinecraftServer. It should just give you a filepath when you drag and drop it in terminal.
But if that file path works, we can work with it.
ASSUMING your minecraft_server.jar is in MinecraftServer.
cd /Users/Xxxxxx/Desktop/MinecraftServer/
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
Take that, put in it on your command file, replace the Xxxxxx with your name. And replace the tiny little hyphens "-" in fromt of Xmx, Xms and jar with your own. THEN double click on the .command file.

Swook your a GREAT HELP!
It seemed to have worked! It loaded the world, fantastic i assume i have to do this every time but thats no problem. Now i will get on with mods! Wish me luck, otherwise this may not be my last post :smile.gif:
BTW. If i want to start the server now do i have to use the .command? I ask because i cant use the .command and server.jar at the same time.
The command file is supposed to be a way to launch to server without having to go into terminal and type in cd users etc every time you want to start the server. Its meant for you to just click on it and it'll start the server instantly.
open the minecraft_server.jar and the world will automatically be generated in the directory that its placed it. For example if you open it on your desktop, your desktop will be spammed with a bunch of fires being generated by the server.
