Hi, I'm considering setting up an always on MC server on my cable connection and I have a few questions for anyone that is running a server currently.
For (say) 16 people max, what is the usual upstream bandwidth used for a largeish world?
What would the daily/monthly MBs uploaded for a reasonably active server?
I'm on a fairly restrictive internet contract and don't want to be capping myself each month (damn Australian ISPs to hell, seriously). I also don't want to disrupt the usefulness of our connection.
EDIT: Set up the server (mcsharp), if anyone is interested the per person usage is around 1.5 KB/s both up and down I was averaging 2-3 people on a highish estimate and my limit counts both up and down traffic: So my usage was around 400MB per day. quite a bit on the high side for me, I shudder to think what it would be on a busy server.
currently with 7 people on my server i'm using about .35 KB of bandwidth, minecraft servers use a very small amount of bandwidh
I think the appropriate statistic to give would be bandwidth per unit time, seeing as a server just put up will have used 0 bytes of bandwidth and one up for a long time will have used quite a bit. An answer in KB/s would be more appropriate.

I don't have hard data, but probably not that much. I operate my server on a ~900kbps uplink with little to no noticeable lag. That's the great thing about minecraft :smile.gif:
That answers the "will it have day-to-day impact", Thanks. At that kind of usage rate I expect running one 24 hours should work OK. Just gotta hunt down a crappy PC to run it off.
