So, since I have a really good laptop, I have a leftover desktop sitting in my room. Since I have some new birthday money I was thinking of buying a internet router and setting up a server or two. The computer is five years old, a Intel Pentium 4 (prosseser?), 2.50 GB of ram.
With it's own router, and no other prosseses, could it host three or more servers? If this question requires more information, I can get it later. Also, my buget is about $40, could I get a good router, and portfowarding software, with that?
Its own router? A DEDICATED router?
Short answer, no. It really depends on your connection upload speed.
Additionally, you won't get over 3 servers with 1 IP.
You want to give one computer its own router? If you do that, there's no reason to use a router. A router is intended to run multiple computers off one line.
And a 4-server limit per IP? I was unaware of such limitation. Is it a security limit put in place by Notch?
Since our current router runs four computers (five with the downstairs one) I thought it should get it's own so the connection speed is faster.

Yes, a dedicated router. Would the connection speed be increased with it's own router? I don't really need more than 3 servers.

I think it's 4 servers per IP, but yeah you'd need more IPs to get over 4.
How would one get more IP's? More routers?

Instead of a router, you are probably thinking modem (DSL/Cable modem). With only a modem, you can generally only use one computer per internet line. In order to have an extra IP, you need an extra line (thus, seperate modem).
Would it be better to just use the router we have? Would the servers be slow if it shared a internet source with up to four computers at a time?
Since I'm willing to invest in dedicating several servers, and that birthday money won't spend itself, I will spend money on the modem; but if i don't have to, there's not much point.
Okay, just so you know, it's really not likely that you'll be able to run a decent server (much less 3) on an internet connection shared with 4 other computers. What other people are suggesting (with the modem thing) is that you get a new modem, meaning another internet connection (and another monthly internet bill), to be dedicated to your server(s), and only your server(s). I'd suggest that, unless you've got a very good upload speed, it's not a good idea to host more than one server. And on a $40 budget, it's not likely that you'll be able to buy the supplies for another modem, etc. However, if it's just a private server for you and a couple of friends, you might be able to host ONE on your current internet connection, (assuming it is the one shared with 4 people). If anyone disagrees, so be it, and feel free to set him straight if you feel that I'm wrong. But, I hope this helps. Good luck. :wink.gif:

Basically, one modem per internet line.
