I have my router IP address, but i don't know what brand/type of router i have. I've been told that i should just look at my router, but i don't know where it would be. i don't have a seperate physical router outside of my computer, so could it be inside my computer? And if not where would it be?
Your router HAS to be outside of your computer. Tell me, how do you connect to the internet, wirelessly, or with a cable?
If there is a cable, find where it leads and post it here. By the way, this post really belongs in the support fourm

If you have dial-up there is no possible way your connection could handle running a server. 56k is nowhere near the bandwidth you'd need to have a server that doesn't lag horribly.
EDIT: Unless you mean DSL, in which case if you don't have a router you don't need to worry about forwarding, it's all covered by your modem.
I must have DSL then, since i have a modem. Anyway how would i use Simple Port Forwarding? it has a list of routers and no modems. I can play Minecraft fine. I get an average of 50-85 fps and i have peaked at about 210.

First of all, fps is not directly related to connection speed. Connection speed should be measured with something like http://speedtest.net/
Second, if you have a modem and no router, you don't need to port forward, you only need to open the port on windows and unblock it from any firewalls you have.
Well i got my server going. It's called worldofgoo's test water. I want to know how to make my self an admin, how to add commands, and change the map. This is my first server.

A. To make your self an admin, either go to the console window and type
op yourname
Ex: op worldofgoo
B. Commands aren't addable unless through a script, which we have a guide for elsewhere. Or custom servers, but we can't talk about those much.
C. Changing the map is as easy as replacing files. There is a file called server_level.dat, in which you may replace when the server is offline. (Back up your old map!) You may use a script or program to keep backups handy and to restore to another map.
D. Physics usually work on maps by the power of 2^ last i checked, if your water isn't running correctly then the map size may be corrupt. If you want still (Static/non moving) water you'll need either a Memory Editor (Won't work.) or a custom server, or sponges and good building.
I got cheezecake to make a post in minecraft servers about my server. (worldofgoo's test water) I told him to change rule #2.

Former #minecraft channel operator.
Try to be more informative.
A script is something you can run/add on to the server. Ex: cMss.
