You might want to add something on keeping the server up on a regular schedule. I've found that even though I only kept it up for 4 to 6 hours a day, my regulars kept coming back. Until I got a little lazy and started skipping days. They rarely come back anymore :sad.gif:
Uh, no, I dont HAVE to. I c0ould, however the section is for server scripts, different from server SOFTWARE. Note that I have not included MCSharp, MInerCPP or iCraft either.
HaloShadow: Thanks for the slightly creepy comment.
Narcissus: For that, I would recommend downloading MCZall (now MCLawl) as it is the best server software Ive seen for creative so far. It allows the builder/guest system you're talking about and lot's more. Sadly, the development seems to have slowed down a bit now that it's changed hands from Zallist to Lawlcat, but it's still in the transition period, so I have high hopes.
Spawn Jail improvement.
I would like to improve the spawn jail section. as people will build were they spawn to escape the owner of the server should use the /z op_air command inside the jail to make it so that only ops can build in the spawn. this will make escape impossible
The guide is pretty well put together, but you forget one very important thing. Server security.
Given the popularity of this game and the fact the forums are wide open for read only, it a very good place for someone find targets... I've seen a few now that someone tosses their IP up on here and next thing they know, they are being hacked.
Router: If you are giving out your IP, then you better be sure your router is locked down tight.
Windows: make sure you have your firewall turned on, AV running and all that good stuff.
Linux: SNORT is a great tool for network intrusion, make sure your rules are up to date. Aside from that, make sure your box is locked down as well, not running any services that you don't need... apache... ect
In all cases I would suggest a through scan using nmap and close any holes that it finds. (may want to run before you install SNORT as your logs for that day will be quite large)
If you don't know how to do what's mentioned above, I would suggest you only give your IP to your friends.
i dont think it is. every says there is a problem. that doesnt really support what ur saying. srry no offense. unless u can guide me through this manually it still dont work
Ahem. Sorry, that's me clearing my throat after an absence of _about two months_.
So...
UltimateBudgie: Thank you so very much, I will update the main post, and I will give you credit. :smile.gif:
dmitchell94: Thank you very much for that ingenious tip. I'll add it as a note, but seeing as not all server software supports that command, it will be no more than that; a note.
Tackers: You're welcome. :smile.gif:
Alexin: To be honest, I'd recommend MCZall as a good piece of server software. It's free, too! I don't have much expereince with map editors any more, though. Sorry.
thegamertag: Thank you very much. :smile.gif: However, you may want to wait on that RP server, as I should like to announce something;
I should like to announce (yay for redundancy!) that I am going to, at some point, write an RP edition of How to Build and Maintain a Good Server. I cannot promise you'll be seeing this any time soon, nor that it will be any good, nor that it will be of much help to Creative server owners, but I shall hopefully get it to you all anyway. So, with that, I bid you goodnight for the moment. :smile.gif:
EDIT: Oh, even more people on a new page!
endofzero: Thank you, but that seems to apply mainly for SMP servers, and this is more Creative. I may include it in my next guide.

Wargate: Er, thanks?
I'm glad it got stickied.
Just one thing though: ALL the links to the different server scripts are broken.
It'd be good if you updated them, and fixed them up.

These should replace the ones in the original post.

jerickhd: Indeed.
