So, I just spent the last half hour trying to find a public server to play on. My quest was unsuccessful. Oh, I found plenty of servers, but they were inoperable, useless, completely devoid of any qualities one looks for in a Minecraft server.
-On three servers, there were spawnjails, and absolutely no one on.
-On one server, there was a spawnjail, and an administrator so illiterate that he couldn't understand what I was saying to him as I complimented the name of his server. In his confusion, he decided to go back to building without releasing me.
-On two servers, there was not a spawnjail, and the entire server was griefed. I'm not going to build on a server without moderators. The experience of watching someone blatantly tear down your building, and knowing there is nothing you can do to stop them, is horrible and not worth experiencing.
-On one server, I was instakicked, presumably because they were running that invite only program.
-Finally, I found a good looking server, with several OPs, including the admin. I was let out of the spawn jail quickly, people were talking, stuff was good... Until it shut down two minutes after I joined. I assumed God hated me, I quit searching.
Now, Cheeze's server was pretty cool. I'll probably go back to try it out when it isn't near shutdown time. But the seven others were total ****.
I think we need a thread with a loose "do-and-don't" list, and maybe a list of servers that do a good job following them. I mean, most are common sense, but it looks to me like it's uncommon on the server list.
SO THE POINT OF THIS THREAD.
Post what you look for in a public server, or I suppose in a private server. Maybe once I've got a good feel for what everyone likes, I'll make a better first post.
I'll kick it off:
-At least one OP on and active, all the time, or at least as much as possible.
-Talking. If a server is dead silent, and people, especially the OPs, are non responsive, I will leave. I can't trust people that absorbed in whatever to protect me from griefers.
-I don't want to spend more than a minute in the spawn jail. When I join, I immediately say hello. I use a capital letter and punctuation and everything, classy ****. If an OP isn't letting me out, or at least telling me some rules within thirty seconds, the server is in my **** book.
-I hate it when an entire server shows grief damage. If you're online, and your server looks like that, you should be ashamed. It's called backups, people. Even if you have to do with the WoM client by dumping levels manually.
That's not nearly everything I expect, lol, because I'm picky. But these are things that I believe EVERY server should have. This is the ground floor for me.
What do you want when you're trying to find a public server?
It's funny you bring this up. Not too long ago, I was trying to find a good server but was left unsatisfied. I couldn't word what I didn't like, though.
-A very important thing is having the entrance semi-clear. It is annoying to walk out and not be able to see a large section of the map.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Blargha! Blargha! Blargha!
I wouldn't listen to a thing I say. I'm probably insane.
The main things I look for in a Public server, is OPs who aren't too lenient. If you physically see someone griefing, and you're the OP, don't just kick them. They should be banned if you catch them griefing.
I look for servers with verify-names=true that way no one can impersonate another person / or the server can be hijacked.
I don't look for servers with a lot of people on because chances are, out of 24 players a minimum of 3 are griefing.
Common courtesy.
And I can't stand when people come in and act like they're all that and feel they don't have to follow the rules as much as everyone else. :/ Like this one guy that said he was an admin from 7chan and expected me to let him out of the guest area simply because of that.
-A very important thing is having the entrance semi-clear. It is annoying to walk out and not be able to see a large section of the map.
That's a good one. I wouldn't have thought of that, but yeah. If I step out into a cramped, crazy colored metropolis, I immediately expect there to be no room. I like to be able to step out and see how the map is laid out.
I host the server from my computer and I only have it up when I know I'm going to be on, or if one of my friends (ops) want to play for a while. I rarely let it run without ops.
I salute you. It sounds like I would like your server, lol.

All of these are good things. I ban too, because griefers are non repentant. If someone only kicks, I won't leave the server, it is their choice. But I prefer the ones that ban. As for verify-names, I wasn't concerned by that until Herrode showed up a few days ago. Now it's a lot more important. As for the number of people, I try to aim for a middle range, four to eight. I like talking to people while I play, but I don't like being lost and scared and confused in a sea of... twelve. Lol.

Not my fault, thier fault for not setting public=false(see vede's topic).
You made that program? I'm not blaming you, lol. I agree fully with the public=false thread. At the very least, if they run public, put a warning in the thread title.

I remember that guy. I wouldn't trust a #chan admin as far as I could throw him to begin with, but it's true that coming in like you're the boss is never a good idea. It goes for admins too. Just because someone has a server doesn't mean that they're Notch. I'm not going to swear allegiance to whoever built the little spawn jail I'm trapped in, lol, which I was once asked to do.
i run my server similar to towel. its only up when im home and i norm leave the jail open cause i can still monitor the server via my mini-map. i am norm always monitoring the irc channel. also there is norm another op either in-game or watching irc. no server could survive w/o regular backups.
i made a large underground section, made out of admin blocks. players can go there and do what they want. if they look trusted, i let them in our world

I've only been on a few servers that actually leave jails open when the admin is online. It's always a pleasant surprise, lol. But I do see why people leave them closed. I prefer to hear someone speak before I release them, because in my experience, people who are silent all the time are rarely up to any good. There are exceptions of course. But for the most part.

This is a good system, I know that Yuushi does something similar on his. Build small in this space first, and then you can build big on the actual map. It has it's drawbacks for people like me, who go crazy and don't know how to build small things anymore. But it definitely limits the amount of escaped griefers.
I think I'm going to start writing out a list. I'll post it soon, let me know what you guys think :biggrin.gif:

i used to do the same exact thing. now i have my mini-maps working i just watch them w/o them knowing it and can see what their movement is like. its easy to tell if someone is griefing by how they move around.
the oddest thing tho is when ppl join my map and ask to be let out of jail, or when ppl join and leave right away.
I think we need a thread with a loose "do-and-don't" list, and maybe a list of servers that do a good job following them. I mean, most are common sense, but it looks to me like it's uncommon on the server list.
I hope you realize 3/4th's of the public servers on there are unaware of this forum's existence, and if they did find out, around 1/2 of those wouldn't care. All servers have their own standards laid down vis a vi by their server owner. The server owner has control of their own server and that server alone, and people telling them what to do will very rarely help. Their server, their rules, sadly.
The only way I could ever imagine this ever having some effect is if Notch himself set rules and standards that servers must follow, and unless he does not enforce those rules (i.e. taking down a server from a list), it'll be only taken like a grain of sand.
Now that part of my post is over, I'll start with a completely new one.
I like seeing a server that isn't griefed and is friendly. That is honestly, my only standard for visiting servers.
-Finally, I found a good looking server, with several OPs, including the admin. I was let out of the spawn jail quickly, people were talking, stuff was good... Until it shut down two minutes after I joined. I assumed God hated me, I quit searching.

I laughed because the last one was mine.
Dedicated starting this week!
The one I liked? That was Cheeze's. The instakick one? cuuuuuurssseee yoooooouuuuu

Private Server Feature List
I'm really talking about public servers, things that I casually go on. Private servers have totally different needs and methods than our more open brethren.

Yes, a lot of people ignore the forums, and yes, some of the ones that would see such a list would ignore it too. But if there are any sensible server operators out there that see it, they might consider following the suggestions. People don't make servers with the intention of sucking balls. They just end up doing so out of ignorance, something that is curable. What I'm saying is, NEVER LOOOOSE HOOOOPE~

Why don't you apply for Zuriki's invite-only private server? Its empty once in a while, but there's no grieving at all and the map is pretty awesome.
I'm not a fan of private servers to begin with, and I don't have anyone that can vouch for me, because I hang out in public servers with noobs, lol.
I'm new to this game and everything, but I think I caught on quickly. Quick enough to know it's not worth it to pub-hop looking for a decent time and conversation. Soooo, I did what I thought was a good idea, and hosted my own server. Now, I don't know much really, I just started playing 2 days ago, BUT, in my own opinion, I think I host a good server:
I or my 1 other friend is always on. (Ops)
Spawn jail is quick and concise so long as the inmate is responsive.
I think a sandbox game is great for conversing with stranger and whatnot.
My point is: If you're tired of looking for random servers, look for Caviano, no special levels or anything, but no grief, no wasted time. Promise!

Now, Lucifer seems to have mostly beaten me to saying this.. but making such an assumption that were a vast majority of regular Minecraft players to be aware and frequent these forums were not to care of any of the helpful suggestions other successful server OPs or admins, and even regular players may have that could better their servers or playing experience is.. well to me is ignorant.
In no way can anyone speak on behalf of of Minecraft players as a whole, because you can see even in this topic, that people do care. Weed through those of this forums that have tendency to spam or make useless remarks and there'll be lots of us who take things such as this into consideration and in most cases likely use it to mold our own guidelines and standards when playing on or hosting a server.
If I just come out of nowhere on some things, ignore it. I've been awake a long time, and it's now 9am. :/
Now, something I would like to suggest(may have been already, sorry if so) is that people be more social when it comes to playing. It's multiplayer for a reason, and gets horribly boring when there is no one communicating, even when communication is attempted and you get no response. It only adds to the fun-factor of playing Minecraft in multiplayer, and the reason I don't play the single player modes since I get no sense of fun or satisfaction out of playing alone and having no one there to talk to or work with to coordinate a project with.
You sure woulda liked my server then. I usually only went public on weekends, more than enough time to snag a few more players. Even a few of the oldbies around here dropped in.
Mainly, I was hosting for the folks at this other forum I hang out at.
They're all pretty well behaved, though some of them can be a bit bossy.
To the point, just about all those guys were ops. There would always be someone on, usually with me though, 'cause I was watching the map like a hawk usually from a high tower.
Griefing was rarely catastrophic, maybe some flooding in a bottom-level tunnel system. But hey, that's why we have sponges now.
I'm gonna host some more when survival multiplayer comes up.
Pretty much what I'm saying is that if I'm hosting a server, I feel like I owe it to my players to kinda go full-time security patrol on the thing. I might not be building much, but as long as everyone else is having fun I don't mind a bit.
It's been awhile. I kinda miss tailing suspicious players to see if they're going to grief.
-On three servers, there were spawnjails, and absolutely no one on.
