Hello,
I've had this idea of an RP gamemode, I won't release the details on it yet, but after some testing I've decided a custom server would be nice, at least until Notch implements multiplayer survival. In basic terms, I need a server shell that can give me the data whenever a player removes or adds a chunk, specifically, what type and location. In a more broad scope, I'd like to be able to keep track of how many and what kind of chunks players have removed, allow players to place ore blocks, and implement a system for changing certain blocks on a certain event. Don't spam me with posts telling me to research packet sniffing, I know there are those of you out there who have figured out how minecraft's server functions, and I respect you, but I would like a little help with this. As I'm not sure people would want this floating around the forums, please email me if you would like to help. My email address is [email protected]. Any help as far as programming servers would be appreciated. I am fluent in Java and willing to work with Python as long as I can get the job done.
Ok, after seeing what happened with JTE's thread I want to set a few things clear:
1. I do not plan on releasing this to the public; it is for my own private use
2. I do not intend to compete with Notch's gamemodes. If and when Notch releases Survival Mode Multiplayer, I will gladly restrict this to paid members, thus not giving anything to free users that are benefits of paid users. If worst comes to worst, I'll remove it from the public server list entirely.
There's no problem with asking about this here, as long as you don't intend to distribute something that will make it possible for free users to access premium things, like skins and survival. In regards to building it, you should consider contacting JTE or aera, they've both built their own and might be able to help you on how.
You're allowed to distribute a custom server btw, Notch just would appreciate it if people with them wait until it hits beta (minecraft) before releasing them.
