Surely I'm not the only one with issues on this, so I think a thread just for it would be usefull.
But for me, anyone can connect to my server, besides myself. I CAN connect, if verify names is off, using the local IP like I'm supposed to, but if I try with it on, only I get kicked. It seems like it thinks that my local IP is my name, being invalid.

Please stop posting when you don't know what the **** you're talking about. The host can't connect with - the external IP.
Hes trying to help you and you tell him to GTFO? Try using the external url. I only get an illegal name when i use minecraft.net/play?ip=127.0.0.1&port=PORT1
I have tried, and have hosted for things other than this, I know that I can't properly connect to some things, like this, using the - external url. It connects, but you can't use the chat, nothing updates, ect.

Ignoring the previous comment... Have you tried changing your port? You'll have to find other options to play with, in order to get this right. Alas, can anyone else join?
Here is my way to ALWAYS FIX IT. Its called Refresh the Page and it works
I agree that works for me too, but sometimes it doesn't work for other people.
You can try various IPs:
localhost - 127.0.0.1
Assigned Local IP - 192.168.x.x (x.x would be whatever you assigned through port forwarding, if you did that, otherwise you'll just have to test by counting, start with 192.168.0.2 and count to 20, then start with 192.168.1.0 and count to 20 (0-20 that is)).
External IP - get it from the web somewhere
