So i accidentally closed my server today. There were players connected.
It had just saved so I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but when I went to start up the server again it would not let me!
This is the error message:

It seems there were open connections. I did a netstat and found two lines like these.
This might also be the problem that slows down my entire network access after I've stopped hosting from my PC, which other users on the IRC also reported.
you can't, killing the process means that the process ends and server is unconnectable, but the port is still in use. If you kill the process, edit server.properties, change the port and restart. It's the only way.

One closed after ~15 minutes but I had to host my server on another port in the meantime.
What I really want to know is, how can I safely close my server, so that I'll be able to restart right away?
