SETUP INTER NETWORK
You're going gather information from your computer and your router.
Click start>type "run" into the search bar>select the Run Program
once Run opens, type in cmd
once Command prompt opens type in ipconfig
Write down your Default gateway, and we'll call it your ROUTER NUMBER from now on.
now open up a browser and type in your router number to get into your router.
Type in your credentials to access it and edit configurations.
You want to find your LAN setup, because this will be your HOME network, on the backside of your router.
For my router is was ADVANCED>SETUP>LAN SETUP
Find your network addresses/range and subnet mask.
192.168.1.1 is the IP adress of the router.
255.255.255.0 is the subnet mask of my network. We will now call this the SUBNET number
192.168.1.2 is the LOWEST number any device on my network can have.
192.168.1.254 is the HIGHEST number any device on my network can have.
You will now STATICALLY assign an IP adress to the computer HOSTING the server.
It will have to fall in between 2 and 254.
You can pick ANY number, for this tutorial I will pick 66.
So now my STATIC IP will look like this 192.168.1.66
Now open your network and sharing center, and click on your active connection.
Once that's open click on PROPERTIES.
In the properties window, select the IPv4 and click properties.
Here you will assign your STATIC IP, type in your SUBNET number, and your ROUTER NUMBER.
Select the "Use the following IP address" radio button.
and set up your static IP.
For the DNS part, you can point it at your router, and use the ROUTER number.
Now click apply, until you're back at this screen.
BUT now click on the SHARING TAB.
Select Settings from the sharing tab
Here you will NOT have the minecraft services until you put them in, this is how you SHARE out your port for minecraft. Click on ADD
You will have to add TWO services, I just put them on the same picture to save space (lol)
You want to type in your STATIC IP number, and the port for minecraft, which by default is 25565.
Click ok, or apply until it you're back at your desktop.
Now BACK to the router, you want to find the port forwarding setup of the router.
For me it was ADVANCED TAB>ADVANCE SETUP>PORT FORWARDING/PORT TRIGGERING
Here you add a new service, and input eh following.
My router lets me choose a reserved address, so I chose my computer. 66
When you're done you should have something that looks like this
Now go over to IPchicken.com or whatismyip.com and find out your public IP address. to let your friends connect they will simply add your address to their server list.
Server Name: A Minecraft Server
Server Address: 11.22.33.44:25565
the 11.22.33.44 is what your Public IP address would be.
This is the part where your server will work UNDER NORMAL conditions, but if it still doesn't, keep going, I will go over some trouble shooting.
FIREWALL
Your firewall is there to BLOCK connections into your computer.
If you're hosting a server you want to let people access that.
So now open up your control panel and click on windows firewall.
Click on allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall
Scroll down to all of the minecraft entries, and ensure that both private and public are checked.
if not, click on change settings and check them.
Alright Now if it was your firewall blocking it, you should be good... if not... My last resort is to
CHANGE THE PORT YOUR MINECRAFT SERVER RUNS ON.
You can check the status of your port through online port checkers.
Check your port for your public IP Address.
If it says closed, then this means that the next networking device your modem/router/hub is connected to is blocking that port. You can call your ISP and have it opened, but I doubt the customer service will even know where to begin.
My solution was to find an already open port and configure it to that.
I used ports.my-addr.com to find an open port on my public IP.
Here you can specify what range of port numbers you want to scan and see if they are open, this is technically a pre scan to an attack for hacking, so I am not responsible for whatever happens next.
I scanned ports 25000-26000 and waited until there was an open one.
I found one at 25797 and changed EVERY configuration that had a port number to 25797.
That fixed it for me.
Dont forget to change the server.properties file also.
Extra tip:
To play with your friends who have a cracked version of minecraft. change your online-mode to FALSE.
I know it's a lot to read, and to comprehend. It took me about 5 hours of trouble shooting, I kept thinking I set up port forwarding wrong, but it was always my ISP.
Hello everyone, I'm having a really big issue that I can't resolve. So a few weeks ago I decided to set up a minecraftserver so my little brother and I could play online. So I set up a bukkit server and was able to see it in the server section on multiplayer. I realized that the server was only running from my private IP address and I needed to port forward so my little brother could play with me from outside the state. So I followed some instructions to port forward on a Macbook pro and it worked like a charm, I had a few people from different parts of the state visit my server......So...anyway I set the server to Hardcore, I was working on a maze that i had build with monster spawners and all and decided to test my creation. I completely forgot it was on hardcore and ended up dying on my server....well my server happened to kick me out bc I died on hardcore...and I was band from my own server. Any who I tried to unban my self and it was no use..each time i would log in my server would kick me out and re-ban me. I decided that I was going to make a new server so I deleted everything started fresh with a new minecraft file, craftbukkit files. I set everything the way I had it and I'm getting this problem
Ok here are the properties

The crazy thing is, every time I delete the port forwarding and take my local ip address off the server properties... and just let it run with my private (internal) ip it runs fine..but only people in my same network can play on it, and not anyone from outside my network.
any Ideas? is it bc I was already running a server on that port with the same IP?...also i did a timeMachine restore on my mac hopping it would fix it but nothing.
Thanks in advance guys
1)dont put an IP adress in the server properties.
1a) in your port forwarding statements on your router make sure you're pointing at your internal private ip.
2)check the banned-players text file and take your name off.
Hi.
ok so i created a server today and found out that if i want my friends to play over the internet i have to use port forwarding. but i do not use a router, for internet i use the Mobile Access Point on my Phone. any clue on how to make it so people can play on my sever online? im not sure if i can use port forwarding because i cant change the IP adress. please help i want to be able to play online with my friends!
I am tryinf to port forward my minecraft server. I entered my ip adress in the brouser as it said to do in this forum and i entered the username and password. it then sent me to the Cisco Setup page. thats where i got lost. i dont see anything on the screne about port forwarding and there is nothing on the screen that looks like the boxes where you enter Minecraft:25565:25565:TPC:4:25565:25565.
I am not sure if i am on the right page of what to enter here. Anyone familiar with this Cisco Setup page?
I am having the damnedest time creating and setting up a server for me and my wife. I can get the server running from her laptop, and she can login to it, but I cannot log in from my laptop. I have gone through the guide here but I cannot seem to get the forwarding to work.
My wife is running Windows 8.
I am running Mac OS 10.6.8
We have comcast cable internet service connected to an apple extreme base station, but we also have Vonage so I configured the forwarding on that router.
Final issue- we have been sharing an account, do we need to get another account to make this work?

Are you playing on the same WiFi? If so, just open it to LAN. To do so is go onto a singleplayer world, hit ESC, and click "Open to LAN" and choose your options. Then your wife (Currently at home screen of MC) will click the muiltiplayer button. It should say "Searching for LAN worlds..." for a few seconds. Then the world name should pop up and she can connect to it. NO ONE will be able to connect unless they are on the same WiFi as you. If you have a comcast modem/router, they make it easy to port forward. If you still wanna ask me some questions, message me here on the forums. -Blake
EDIT: Forgot this one thing. You MUST have 2 separate accounts to play LAN or any server. One will cancel out the other. Sooooo yeah.

Are you talking about Linksys by Cisco? I am very familiar with that page. I used to use their router, but I switched. I made a video on how to port forward. Please message me if you need further infomation. Vid (Turn on annotations):
Ok, I have a quite interesting situation, I think.
So i've been wanting to port forward for quite some time now. And I am completely familiar with how you do it. The only problem is that we have two routers.
We have one downstairs(Tilgin), and one upstairs(Linksys), the one upstairs gets its connection from downstairs, and I am happening to be using the one upstairs. And let me just tell you, the Tilgin frimware is ing retarded, i've been having so much trouble with it. But i've tried several methods and i've been failing with every single one of them.
So now since my Hamachi is ed up too now, i've decided to get help from here. What do I have to do to port forward it properly upstairs? I recommend you taking a look at the Tilgin control panel or whatever first, before replying.
Allso, ill be glad if someone could remotely assist me, or something.
Thank you, in advance.
If they have separate IP's set up the one closest to the internet to route/forward to the other one; then route the 2nd one to the local machine.
Ok I think the LAN world will work, except were going to need to get different accounts first. I can see the world, but I cannot join because 'that name is taken.' So we will fix that
Ok, I am trying to set up a minecraft server on my computer.
I am running Windows 7, I am using Avast AVG free, I am physically connected to a wireless router, a Belkin F6D4230-4 V1, I have used the instructions in the OP to set up my port forwarding and the instructions below to set up the server software using the .jar file.
I am still unable to connect to the server on my own computer... >_>
I tried to port forward, so i followed all of the steps, I went through the port binding and the firewall. I did everything 100% correctly, I even double checked and triple checked everything. But when I set up my server it will always say "FAILURE TO BIND PORT" and it's really making me mad. If I take off an IP all together and just use "25565" it wont say "FAILURE TO BIND PORT" but then when I check my port, it comes back negative. Grr

I had a vanilla server working before (on the same version of minecraft as is out now, haven't updated anything) with port forwarding the standard 25565 with a static ip (I checked, it definitely hasn't changed) and now other people can no longer connect to it. I haven't changed any settings in my router or server.properties (at least that would affect this), and in my router settings it still says port 25565 is forwarded for both UDP and TCP for my computer's internal static ip. But, when I go to canyouseeme.org it says the connection timed out (which is also the error message my friends get when they try to join). I'm still able to connect from the host computer using "localhost".
I really don't understand the problem because nothing's changed whatsoever from when it was working only weeks ago.
edit: I also never had to mess with Windows firewall before (which didn't help after I followed the guide), it used to work just after port forwarding.
I've tried everything, but canyouseeme.org always says that it can't see my port because the connection timed out, and I can't access the server from Minecraft, either. I have the Minecraft Server program running, and I unblocked the ports, Minecraft, and the Minecraft Server program in Windows Firewall. The only other security program on my computer is Microsoft Security Essentials.
The reason I could not connect to the server was not due to a mistake made during setting up my port forwarding.
It was because I did not realize that I had to launch the server software in addition to launching minecraft, can't connect to something that isn't turned on....
First, I am going to assume you know how to download and extract. minecraft_server.exe
So here's the check list to get a server up and running under NORMAL conditions.
Setup internetwork
-Router information
-static IP
-port forward
trouble shooting steps
-firewall
-advanced sharing in adapter props
-port testing
