I'm using minecraft 1.7.9 and I can't connect to any servers in multiplayer mode. When ever I add a new server it says "can't connect to server" after a few seconds.
I've tried restarting the computer, restarting the modem/router, deleting all files except for the launcher to make it reinstall minecraft, clicking "direct connect", editing the profile to change to earlier versions (inc 1.6 versions), adding something to the host file (I can't remeber exactly what I was told to add) and turning off windows firewall. I'm not sure what else to do. It's a legit version of minecraft. Any help would be appreciated.
Are you 100% sure that the servers you are trying to connect to are also on version 1.7.9? If they are still 1.7.4, (which a lot of servers are) you will be unable to connect. If this is the case, you could try waiting for them to update, or just downgrade your minecraft back to 1.7.4 until they are ready to update themselves.
Yeah, just checked, all the servers I added are all different versions, so I need to install some earlier versions. Are most servers at completely different versions, or are most of them 1.7.4 and above? It seems like a pain to have to switch between different versions to play on different servers.
Most servers like to keep updated with the latest minecraft version, but usually it takes a few weeks for all the servers to get their server there, simply because they also have to wait for all their plugins to update before they can move forward. 1.7.9's update changed a lot of big things in minefcraft's API, mostly involving player names. So big plugin developers have had a lot of work to do. The result, is server owners keeping their server in the previous version until their plugins are ready for the next.
Of course there are always those small servers that like a particular version better than the others, and they'll stay there. But they are the exception, not the rule. For the most part, people like to stay updated, since that's where the most players are playing.
Also, for future reference. If you see a post by someone, and you'd like to reply to them, click the "quote" button. It notifies them that you are replying to a post they made there. If you do not quote them, they will never know you replied to them unless they specifically follow the thread, which seldom ever happens.
I have some info right now that will help you. Searched this issue in google and found this. An error message just popped up for me and will now be popping up for everyone i assume, that mc servers are currently down and they'll fix it soon. Nothing you did wrong, everything should be going fine pretty soon. Dont worry.
