Mojang listen here fix this god damn bug right now i had to delete my server because of it you wanna know why because i went to make it a bukkit server and it crashed and it wouldn't load/open or run also it WOULDN'T let me type in any commands into the console like "stop" and one more thing it only generated the logs and server.properties file but in the server.properties folder it didn't even generate all the setting and i let the console load for about 10 minutes while watching YouTube videos FIX IT NOW MOJANG MY FRIENDS ARE COUNTING ON ME TO MAKE A NEW ONE WITHOUT THE SPASTIC GLITCH
dude the GUI glitch isnt a glitch at all. your world should be fine if it isnt im sorry. but you can make a batch file which is a . bat file and make start up server command for your server and have a console so you can enter the /stop and other commands for you rserver. 1.7.2 has been causing ALOT of problems . but as ive said befors. if you cant make a 1.7.2 release or server as of right now is because it is unstable and really can only work if you know how to work aroudnd these things. if anyhting just stay at 1.6.4 until they come out with a legit good stable version of 1.7.2 bukkit hasnt released one at all and most poeple havent either. so instead of catering to your players like for instance spigot who has released a working version of 1.7.2 but its buggy as all hell. just relax a bit and wait for something that works. also if you paid attention to this thread this is a vanilla thread and issue. because the vanilla .exe has been giving GUI issues and not showing up properly follow the thread and what i said and youlll get a good console. if you want bukkit then im sorry but youre gonna have to wait
Okay, so I am very new to running a server, 2 days ago I downloaded the server stuff from the minecraft website and all that, I fixed my router to do the portforwarding stuff, and I changed my firewall so that it would work with running a minecraft server. Now I can run the server just fine, the issue is even though the server is working and people can connect locally, no one else can connect. What I mean is if someone else who isn't using my router can't connect to my server, it doesn't even come up in the logs as they have tried to use it. My friends who I have tried to get to connect to my server have used my external ip to try to connect. Now I know I should just wait till the next server update to start trying to make a server but I'll really like to trouble shoot stuff and to make it work, but now I feel like I am at a dead end on my own with figuring this out, so any help would be great. Thanks.

then maybe you havent port forwarded properly. go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and check you IP and port to ensure youre forwaarded it right. check your routers anf computers firewall to ensure youre allowing connection to your computer and through your firewall. also next time please it would be easier to just start your own thread to solve that issue

It is a bug with the EXE version of the server. Download the JAR version of the server. It does NOT have this bug. The EXE version outputs to the lot text file but not the textbox, including the text of the java.io.IOException error that shows exactly where it is going wrong when trying to output to the console. The JAR version works perfectly. Download that instead of the EXE version. It calls it a crossplatform verison (for Mac OS or Linux) on the download page, and the EXE verison is called the Windows version. But the JAR version also works in Windows. So that is the one I'm going with. I've already deleted the EXE version, and replaced it with the JAR version. I recomend all you MC users out there do the same (until this bug is fixed).
[rant]Personally, I think Mojang is an idiot of a programmer for not catching this bug BEFORE publishing the EXE file to the web. It's not like it's a well hidden bug. It is a HUGE BUG that would be 100% IMPOSSIBLE for ANYONE to miss when running the server software, either the end user, or the programmer. My only conclusion is he was trying to push out the new version so quickly, that after compiling it, he IMMEDIATELY uploaded it to the web, without ANY testing whatsoever. Even the SIMPLEST test, running the program, would have IMMEDIATELY shown him that this bug existed. This is the same level of stupidity in programming that resulted in that crap of a website for Obamacare[/rant]
I FOUND THE SOLUTION! Delete the server.propeties file, run the .jar file (Ignore the errors), run minecraft, and in direct connect type "localhost". Your freinds might not be able to join.
I have (had) this same problem, and it is really annoying because to view the console, I had to open and close Notepad++ on the latest.log file over and over again. So I thought that since the latest.log is constantly being updated, I searched for a real-time loading .log viewer, and found this free program BareTail:
All you have to do is download baretail (just click on the Free Version link and it is a direct download) and click the "Open" button, then locate your server's latest.log file and open it with BareTail. I notice less than a second of lag when updating the .log file in BareTail, but it's much better than nothing.
BareTail is also very handy in that it is portable and no installation is required to use it, you just have to save it anywhere on your computer like your desktop.I hope this helps, it helped me a lot!.
There is a fix, but it does get annoying. So where you find your Minecraft server location go to the log folder then open latest log you will find all the logs have not been added to the server launcher but to the file has. You can type all your commands and still will work but you can only see it in that file and you can type the commands in the server launcher but it will not show unless looking in that file and every time you want to find something after you opened it you need to close notepad or what ever program you are using and reopen unless there's a refresh option. Hope this helped
that will start your server and instead of getting that big ugly window lol sorry i dont like it. youll get a command prompt instead. replace minecraftserver.exe with whatever your server is called and if youre using the jar change - exe to - jar in the code
please everyone do this until mojang can come up with a solution to fix the built in gui for 1.7.2

I think that I may have a solution when it comes to the console, instead of running it from the .exe file try downloading the jar file and using that instead. You could alternately run it from the CMD prompt like a bukkit server.

doesnt matter if you have the jar or the .exe creating a .bat file for either of them will do the same thing. just fashion the batch file for whichever version you have.

I tried qtpriest's fix with the .jar server... when I open the startserver.bat I get this
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occured. Program will exit.

that means you do not have enough ram to execute the operation. 2G is what you would need to change . looks like youre working with a 32 bit system so change 2G to something a little smaller like 1500M then see if that works it is because when working with a 32 bit system you can only allocate a maximum of 2 gigs to any operation. thats why you would get that error. if you dont have a 32 bit system than its still the same thing . youre running low on RAM
I researched this the other day. Apparently going to the minecraft site and downloading and using the minecraft_server.jar instead of the .exe is the current workaround for this bug. While it isnt a fix for the problem it will work for the time being.

*nevermind, I just saw the .jar related posts.
Thanks a bunch! This worked
That does nothing at all; now I, as a Hamachi user, am left with nothing but a singleplayer world that appears on my servers list.
