the earth first! we can strip mine the rest of the universe after. click the up arrow if i helped.
I had this same problem. Here's what I did: (Unnecessary, but thought I would share my experience.)
Download minecraft-server.exe.
Run.
Edit server.properties to my tastes (seed, name, etc. I did NOT change the IP address or Port.)
Run server again.
Type ipconfig into command line. Use the port listed under "IPv4 Address" to connect.
After following these steps, I connected to the server from another computer and could do stuff. However, the GUI in the server window did nothing. I typed it /say Hi! in the window, and could see the message in chat on the other computer; however, there was no response from the software itself. I don't know if this glitch affects the .jar version of the software or not, but I will test it now. My server.properties:

EDIT: Tested this method with the .jar version and the gui works.
all you really have to do is just create a batch file for the launcher and make it run in command prompt instead of running in that ugly window mojang gives you. then it will give you a working console window.
java -Xms512M -Xmx1G -jar minecraft_server.jar -o true nogui
PAUSE
(add in -d64 if your server is on a 64-bit computer using 64-bit java)

Same problem is happening in 1.8, everything was working fine until I put a 1.7.9 map on my server. I tried it on other server versions but it worked except 1.8
EDIT: The problem is that you need to delete the player data in /<WorldName>/players and that's how my problem got fixed!
