I have 64bit Windows Computer, with 64bit OS. I have 8G of RAM.
When I open up the batch(.bat) file it opens up the server, but with only a little bit more than default, but not at all what I tell it to. I assumed it would use up more when someone joined the server, but no it did not. I even tried putting it to 6G of RAM, but only reached a max of 500mb used. I THINK this is the right code.
@ECHO OFF
SET BINDIR=%~dp0
CD /D "%BINDIR%"
java -Xmx6G -Xms6G -jar minecraft_server.jar
PAUSE
Everytime I use that to open it up, it is more, but not what it is suppose to be. If my math is correct 500mb is not even close to 6G. If anyone could help me out, that'd be great. Thanks.
Ram does not equal to performance.
I like the explanation of "If you were solving a math problem, the RAM would be how much paper space you could use to solve it"
Basicly, it doesnt use more than it needs to, as stated above.
You can give as much ram to a server as you want, but that doesn't mean it'll use it. At the moment, I have my server running with a max of 3Gb, and it's using a total of 420Mb (with no players online). When more players join, it'll use more of that 3Gb. When it reaches 3Gb (which I doubt it will), it will no longer be able to get more ram, and get overloaded if it requires more.
The same goes with you. 6Gb is an overkill, judging by that you're running it off of your PC, and it's only using 500Mb. I'd say 2 - 3 Gb is enough. When the server needs more than the 500Mb, it'll use it.
