I know what causes this. If you go to http://help.mojang.com/ or http://xpaw.ru/mcstatus/ you can check which services are up and down. If sessions are down, that means you can't join any servers. This is something that Mojang needs to tell us about, so the whole internet doesn't get in a ­storm over this.

Only thing red on that site is MC sessions, and its happening to me now

The only thing you can do is wait. Or maybe set up a local server with less strict authentication. Or play single player for a while.

Most common cause for this error is school/work blocking... So when your client attempts to authenticate with minecraft.net, the Blocking software returns a webpage (through the HTTP protocol) instead of the data your MC client wants... A solution would be using a proxy of some type...

Even if you are in an unblocked network, it can't hurt to attempt using a proxy to rule out YOUR net being the issue.

I don't have any plugins and it's doing this. I used to have xray but it's not on or not working. It's obviously not happening to everyone...

yup same here altho it happened last night and then when i woke up this moring it was better and thn after an hour it crashed again

Oh yeah, getting the same thing when i do, "localhost" I tweeted to mollstam to see what was going on with the servers. Haven't heard back yet :/
