I have tried to make a minecraft server and my friends can't connect. I know the problem is port forwarding because the actual server works, but my friends can't connect to it. Also, I have gone to canyouseeme.org and none of the ports I open work. This doesn't apply solely to 25565. None of the ports I open work.
I am doing port forwarding correctly so far as I can tell. My router is Netgear. I type my ip address in the search bar, go to advanced, go to advanced setup, go to port triggering/forwarding, and unlock port 25565. UPaP or something is marked as working.

then its private and you can't run a minecraft server.
If you want to run a server then you have to buy a static ip like 15$ a month or some **** like that i hate it so its cheaper just to buy a host.Unless your computer can deal with 40 people playing then buy the public ip.
"Residential" IPs start with 192.168.*.*. If you have an IP like that it means that you are inside a router, not that you cannot make a minecraft server (e.g. my server..)
Double check your settings for it, you probably didn't route the port correctly.
You also need to set a static IP for your server (to keep it routing correctly). If you're using the 192.168 platform, I would recommend setting it as 192.168.<default-number>.10. Then routing 25565 to 192.168.#.10. Make sure your computer's firewall is off (Ubuntu - sudo ufw disable (or) sudo ufw allow 25565), (OSX SystemPreferences>Security>Firewall>Disable), Windows (I forget :P).
Setting up a server is hard without a background in IP magicks, or just getting dumb luck- then learning how the IP magicks works (I did the latter :D).

This is simply wrong. If it starts with 192.168 (or any of the others) it just means that you are looking at the Private IP, which you then need to forward to the public IP's port.

Running Servers and Developing Plugins... Fun!
ifly6server.no-ip.org ---- BukkitMark (extraordinarily young plugin designed to benchmark Bukkit servers)
I told you, I did the port forwarding correctly, and I have a static IP address. This issue has been addressed countless times if you search it on google. There are over 50 forum posts about this topic and no one gave them a answer that helped.
I know the ports and the server info is correct because I have a friend that has a minecraft server running perfectly fine that guided me through all the steps, as well as a website that gives specific directions for each specific router and model.
To all those who are looking for the solution to this problem. I have checked millions of sites on google, and searched it countless of times. I Have found no answer and have decided to stop my search. Thank you.
To all that are...still reading this. I have finally found the solution. I am still working out the kinks to it though. If you go to advanced>Setup>WAN Setup.
.
Check the first 3 boxes and enter your 192.168.xxx.xxx IP, After that the port opens. HOWEVER, After doing this I am unable to connect to my router via IP Web Browser. I'm still trying to work out all the kinks as I said.
I just found out that after doing the method above, Your IP and default gateway change. Check through IPCONFIGSorry, I was mistaken again. I will post a final time after I fully solved the problem. Sorry for the inconvinence

Ok, I am unsure of how to delete posts, but just look at this last one. After doing the method above your IP changes. Your new IP can be found in CMD>IPCONFIG>Default Gateway.
I am unsure why it changed, but your 'whatismyip' is now incorrect and to access your routers setup you have to enter your default gateway number instead.
Thank you for the information you have provided. I have been having issues myself with allowing others access to my server. I have port forwarded as you have through much research. I have done the firewall exceptions. I have even disabled my routers firewall. When I test the port, it still shows closed unable to connect, connection refused.
I have a Belkin router and have looked at all the options, sadly I cannot find advanced options to change the WAN setup; however I did find this option...
Firewall > DMZ
The DMZ feature allows you to specify one computer on your network to be placed outside of the NAT firewall. This may be necessary if the NAT feature is causing problems with an application such as a game or video conferencing application. Use this feature on a temporary basis. The computer in the DMZ is not protected from hacker attacks. To put a computer in the DMZ, enter the last digits of its IP address in the field below and select "Enable". Click"Apply Changes"for the change to take effect.More Info
Any idea if enabling this would work. I really hate messing around too much with my router settings without someone else's insight with not knowing a large amount of info about them.
Also, since I have DSL connection and my phone service is through VOIP with a Lynksis router/modem comb could this be preventing outside connections? I have spoke with my ISP multiple times. They state there should not be a problem; that they do not block any inbound connections and that the VOIP service should not interfere. I even went to the extenct to pay an additonal $5.00 a month for a public IP address with them and still was unable to show the ports open and have anyone else connect.
Any insight and information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.
I can connect to my server fine with my LAN ip addres however; people can not connect with either my LAN ip or my WAN ip. I've had a server work before but now I am unsure on what to do. Sould the people trying to connect add ":port #" to the end of the ip?
My IP for some reason apparently changes everyday and I always have to change it to stop the 'can't bind to port error', I finally make a server and it doesn't work properly, sometimes even I can't go on my server.
Your IP is changing everyday because it is a 'dynamic' IP address. 'Static' IP addresses keep their IP's and do not change.I am having trouble too for port forwarding my router. Everything I did was correct....port forwarded to 25565.
This is a little late, but after scouring the forums and wading through router menus all day I finally figured out what the issue I (and possibly some of you) was having. Everything was correctly forwarded in the router settings, but the port still wasn't being shown as open. Apparently the modem I'm using (Motorola) that is connected to the router ALSO has a port forwarding and firewall option that I've never needed to use. The address for this is 192.168.100.1, and the default name and password for motorola modems is admin/motorola. After going into these settings I went into the advanced section, then port forwarding. I then looked at the routers internal ip address (192.168.9.1) in the routers status section and forwarded the port to that. Everything was working after that. So,
TLDR;
1: Log into your MODEMS administrator page. Google your modems model number to figure out how to do this.
2: Find your ROUTERS internal ip address. Usually under the "Status" section of the routers adminstrator page.
3: In the MODEMS port forwarding section (usually under advanced>port forwarding) type in the routers ip address (NOT the same one you have already forwarded in the router settings) and the port you were trying to forward for the server. Click save or what have you
I have a mac and my router IP is 10.something.something.1. I followed all the steps to port-forward a server on mac and my friends can't connect. Please help.
I have a Netgear router and every time I try to port forward my internet turns off. I've recently discovered that this is because of a defense mechanism in my router that will stop at nothing to keep anything from getting through. While that is a nice feature, it kind of goes overboard and it won't let me do what I wanna do with my router. I can't do anything to my router without it turning off all of my internet access.

I have been getting so close to making the server i want but the thing with mine is when i port forward (i use linksys) i enter the 1 in the last slot and it says i cant use it. I see in all the videos how everyone's works but i don't know how i'm supposed to use the 1 in the slot. Anyone got a solution?

Hmm, is your modem switching on and off or something?
