I share the wi-fi with my brother who got a pc, but I have a Mac.
Still I think that the whole problem is a bug they Mojang needs to fix.
I've tried everything, I'm not so good at computers but still I'm not retarded...
That guy earlier said that they need to add something where you can manually input the IP and port. Supposedly that'll work
ok i posted this in another thread this will fix your problem
ok load up your world on your pc. hit esc, then i think its called open to lan. set your settings and click start lan world. now on his pc load MC goto multiplayer and your world should be in the list. now if this is not working then your pc firewall is blocking java. goto your firewall settings and allow java
if you cant find it i will point you in the right place.
open control panel
windows firewall
on the left click advanced settings, window will pop up
click on the left inbound rules, find java make them say enabled yes action allow
to edit the java in red double click it, under the general tab click allow the connection and check the enabled apply and ok
all of the java should be green now
then try
Hey, something else that may cause an issue: If you have Virtualbox installed on the Minecraft host machine, and have the VirtualBox Host-Only Network driver installed, I noticed that Minecraft will try to use that IP instead of your real network adapter's IP. I have no idea why. I had to disable the network adapter in the control panel to fix the issue on my system.
i foumd out what is wrong i gave up and went to make a server for me and my brother again instead of lan and when i went into my router to re port forward because we got a new router i sawl a "fire wall" i disabled it and now it works
I am having the same issue.
I have allowed Java in my firewall (lan) on both laptops. We have a wifi connection.
But the thing that strikes me most, is the fact that it worked yesterday. Only today I have encountered this problem.
We have done the exact same thing as yesterday, but its just not working. Im the host in this situation, I go and turn on the LAN, my sister can see my LAN world but she cant connect. It just forever says "connecting to server.."
Sometimes my world wont even show up on her multiplayer??
So it must be a bug or a mojang thing. I am certain its not our computers as it has worked in the past..
I've got a somewhat similar problem. I've been able to connect to his LAN games, but he's unable to connect to mine. The only thing I can think of that could be causing it is that his computer is running Windows 7 and mine is running Ubuntu 12.04.
Same problem here. I frequently play LAN games with my cousin, and just last week it stopped working. I can see his world just fine, but when i try to join, it says it's connecting to the server, then times out. When I try to host a LAN game from my computer, it doesn't even show up on his list. I haven't seen that particular problem in this forum, so maybe that info will help.
Guys: There is a bug with most win7/dell/hp open to LAN worlds, but it works fine with these rules:
1. Hosted on Mac (sometimes winxp/vista)
2. All the same mods
3. Direct Connect to the ip (scanning is bugged)
4. Within same local area network AND the same network types with both computers
I had the same problem when I was playing the portal gun mod with a friend. It turns out you just need to let it through firewall. This can be done easily.
1. Click on the search thing on the start menu.
2. Type firewall and click on the program, "allow a program through firewall".
3. There's a load of check list boxes that allow you to allow programs through. Make sure every one called java (TM) Platform SE binary is checked.
4. Play LAN and have fun! (It's an important step!)
Hope this helped!

Hey, i had this problem before and you can fix it!
1.) Open minecraft
2.) play and 'open to LAN'
3.) go into your worlds server files* KEEP MINECRAFT RUNNING*
4.) There should be a file/document called LANserver.properties
5.) If your lucky, it wont say 'Cant access file, open in Java Platform SE binary' *If says, skip to FIX. *P.S Open up the file with notepad!
6.) It'll say all the properties of the normal server. edit the one that says ' LAN connection = wi-fi'
7.) change it to ' LAN connection = LAN '
8.) Profit

I have Windows 7 64 Bit and wifi and it works fine here. I just cant connect to a WAN game since the beginning of July. Worked fine before that.
