Hello! Please read this WHOLE THING! This page is made for the soul purpose of helping you start a minecraft server free of charge. We give Port Forward guides and, anything server guides. We will help with some plugins but not all will be answered. I host my own server and it took forever... So I will let you all not go through that pain.
OTHER PEOPLE CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS TOO!
#1:Vanilla Server
This is the section on how to start a vanilla minecraft server. Vanilla is the default server software that does not have any modifications. So lets get started. Go to www.minecraft.net and go to the downloads section. At the bottom you will see minecraft_server.jar (621 KB) Click that to download the server software. Once downloaded open up the software. Once it says "Done" you can type "stop" and shut down the server.
Now it is time for the Port Forwarding. On most youtube videos they say: "And now for the hard part. Port Forwarding" But in reality, it is SUPER easy. All you have to do is open up the start menu, then click on "Run" when open type in "cmd" this will open a new command prompt window. In here you type in "ipconfig /all" this will display the info you need to port forward. You only need two of the things in this. The IPv4 Address: (Eg. 192.168.1.102) This and your default gateway will be needed. (Eg. 192.168.1.1) The gateway is the address needed to access your router.
At this point you need to open a browser window. In this window in the address line type in your default gateway. It will pop open a window where you can type in your routers user and password. To find these you can check with your internet provider or just know it. The Default one is usually this way: Username: admin Password: admin Now that you are in your routers settings, you can find a tab that is something like: Applications and Gaming, Port Forwarding, Sing Port Forward. If you do not know how to do this for your router, visit portforward.com and find your router and look for the forwarding section.
Once here you will find text boxes. The first one is the application name. This can be whatever you want, but in this case you should just use minecraft. In the next two boxes, you should type in your port. For minecraft it is a default of 25565. Once these two boxes are filled in make sure UDP/TCP are selected. (Or select "Both") Before the last text field you see your Ip: Eg. 192.168.1.___ In the blank spot, fill in the last 3 numbers of your Ip. In this it is 142. (For me) Now select the check box and save your changes. You have just port forwarded!
Now all you have to do is run your minecraft_server.jar and be on your way! Before anyone can connect you need to find you external Ip address. This can be found at www.ipchicken.com This is the address you give to your players so they can connect...
#2:CraftBukkit Server
This is how to setup a craftbukkit server. If you read the vanilla one, all you have to do is get the Starter File, and the craftbukkit.jar. I will teach you how to do that first, then do the same as up above.
Hello, time to get started! The first thing you need is to get the craftbukkit recommended build. This can be found at bukkit.org in the top right area. It will say: Recommended Build for Craftbukkit: 1.2.5. You can download it from there and save it. Now you need to get the Starter File. To get this you need to copy one of the following spoiler codes to get them. You can also, on the bukkit main page, click on "Get Craftbukkit" to find the same codes.

#2:Mac CraftBukkit Server [In honor of Ramrod15]
This section is for Mac OSX.
First you need to go to bukkit.org and download the latest recommended build. Then rename it craftbukkit.jar in your server folder. Now open up the spoiler and follow the instructions. I got them from The Bukkit Wiki page on setting up a server. ALL credit goes to them.
Install Java
Since OS X 10.7 Java does not come packaged with OS X. You will need to install java from the Apple's website http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421
Obtaining the Server Files
To run a server you will need the server jars, i.e. the server files. We will need a place to put the files.
Create a New Folder
Open up finder, and create a new folder in your Home folder named CraftBukkit
Download the File
Download the server files. You can download the latest builds from the front page of the wiki.
Note: Download the stable build if you are not chasing the cutting edge in the development build
Move the File
Move the file from the Downloads folder to the CraftBukkit folder you created.
Rename the File
We will rename it craftbukkit.jar
Obtaining startup script
To easily start the server you will need a startup script. The following is a basic server script to start your server.
Open up TextEdit set it to plan text mode under format and paste the following in
Save it in your CraftBukkit folder as start_server.command
Allow the script to run
Open up Terminal.app
Type into Terminal.app
chmod a+x
Warning Warning: Do not hit return
drag the start_server.command into Terminal.app
hit return
Starting the server
From this point on you can start the server by double-clicking start_server.command.
You will need to run the server once for it to generate some configuration files.
Warning Warning: To stop the server, do not close the terminal/command prompt window. Instead, type 'stop' into the console. Closing the terminal window without stopping the server could lead to corruption of the save files.
Port forwarding, on mac, is very much the same as on windows. Except on mac you have to download a bit of software that I tested and is Virus Free! It can be found :here:
Once you have downloaded port map copy down you Ip and your Gateway. Open up a browser, type in your gateway and navigate to the port forwarding section. Sometimes called Applications and Gaming. Then fill in the first box with "minecraft" the next 2 boxes with your server port: 25565 by default. Then make sure UDP/TCP is selected. Sometimes you can select "both" or "all". Now save the settings and run the start.command from the spoiler tutorial.

since i run mc on a mac how do i install mods do i need winrir or sumthing like that a mod launcher?

You need Bukkit. Bukkit it a server software that allows you to add plugins to the game, like world guard. To get bukkit look at my bukkit tutorial ubove. ^
It is easy. Since you are on mac, I will add a Mac Section soon, so just sit tight and then i will get you bukkit.
Essentials names wont change color on mac bukkit, but prefix and chat will.
I am pretty sure, that that is client side, meaning the server has nothing to do with it, sometimes plugins are that way, try re-installing the plugin and maybe use the McPatcher to make minecraft texture work better: Optifine works too, Try this stuff, and ask again, and I will look into it more.
Trying to connect over LAN but can't get other player on to my game? Any advice or tips?
Are you going into single player and clicking open to LAN? IF so, that does not work as of now, so you should go to minecraft.net/download.jsp and get the minecraft server starter, then put it in a folder, start it, and go to your minecraft server list and add a server with the ip section as: localhost
If you are using bukkit, then get the starter for that, and do the same thing! If this does not work, post again with more details.

Now save the settings and run the start.command from the spoiler tutorial.
unfortunately it needs hamachi

since i run mc on a mac how do i install mods do i need winrir or sumthing like that a mod launcher?
cause i want world guard but dont know how
You need Bukkit. Bukkit it a server software that allows you to add plugins to the game, like world guard. To get bukkit look at my bukkit tutorial ubove. ^
It is easy. Since you are on mac, I will add a Mac Section soon, so just sit tight and then i will get you bukkit.
^BUMP^
Read the post, bukkit for a bukkit server and vanilla for default server, read that and follow it. Restart and try that stuff first!
I am pretty sure, that that is client side, meaning the server has nothing to do with it, sometimes plugins are that way, try re-installing the plugin and maybe use the McPatcher to make minecraft texture work better: Optifine works too, Try this stuff, and ask again, and I will look into it more.
Well as of now it is not up as much, and it is a vanilla, but soon, I will make it public again and change completely to bukkit.
If you want to join and do Vanilla Survival Just PM me!
But, I dont want a public release of the Ip right now.
Ok, thanks anyway
