I get this problem when trying to join servers. I've tried many server IP's from http://minecraftservers.org/. All of them used to work, but after I downloaded the latest snapshot it won't. I've reset all my firewall settings to make sure of that, and my buffers are sett to 512 as some sugested. I've scrolled trough some sites looking for an answer but can't find anything. Help?
Okay my buddies figured it out for me. Here we go:
1.) google "minecraft snapshot week 25"
2.) Download the client .jar file.
3.) find your .minecraft file folder
4.) go into bin file
5.) drop new .jar in and move and replace this.
6.) log out and log back in.
I am looking for this fix too. One minute I was happily playing on my favorite server, and the next I am kicked off and unable to play due to this error.
I was on the same boat as all of you until I figured out the problem. If you have Java 7 on your computer delete it and downgrade to Java 6 update 13. I found out that for some reason Java 7 is not completely functional with Minecraft 1.2.5. Then once you able to update minecraft upgrade up to Java 7. That should solve your problem.
1.3.1 is now out and when i was playing in 1.2.5 the servers worked. Next thing i know when i log on it says a new update is avalable do you want to update. I say yes and it loads compleatly normally but when i try and get on servers it comes up with this error.
If anybody knows how to undo the update or how to fiz the problem that would be great.

I am having the same exact problem. They worked in 1.2.5, but I just downloaded 1.3.1 this morning, and now I can't log on to my favorite server! It IS updated, and every time I try to go on to it it says: INTERNAL EXCEPTION JAVA.NET.SOCKET EXCEPTION: CONNECTION RESET
This was my favorite server and I REALLY want to play it again. I can see that other people are on, too. Will it just work out over time? Or do we have to do something?
i got this problem fixed the thing is that the servers arent compatible with the new update so i had to downgrade minecraft. 1.go to programs and put in %appdata% (you should see your minecraft folder now open it) then right click your bin folder and click properties. then go to option that says previous version. click an option that is dated before the update took place and click restore.make sure your minecraft is closed. that should downgrade minecraft and take care of the problem.next time you open minecraft make sure you hit not know when asked if you want to update
I'm pretty sure its the update, most servers haven't updated to 1.3 yet and are still on 1.2.5 so only a few people can join. I'd wait until tomorrow and they should be updated

This worked for me. Thanks for the tip. You must have restore point setup on your WINDOWS machine. It's always a good idea to have a backup of any sys file.

warning: this may cause happiness.
There is another forum post talking about this problem as well. About 10 other people are having the same issue. Here's the link http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1326620-cant-connect-to-multiplayer/
Thats how i got mine to work again!
C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin
