I'm Isaak, I've been trying to get my minecraft server set up for a LAN connection without internet and I've been running into a number of problems along the way. Hopefully one of you can help me out!
Me and my father are going on a big trip into the mountains, it will last about three months. When we get there we will not have any internet access. I'm trying to set up a minecraft server on so that we both can connect our two laptops with a single cable and play with a LAN connection, no routers, no modems.
I've already done a bunch of research on the subject, and followed multiple guides like this one: http://www.minecraft...ork-lan-server/, but I cannot seem to be able to connect to my own server on my laptop at all. Usually I get somthing like it took too long to connect or "Internal exception: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out" and I'm not sure what to do to solve these issues.
On my system (win7 64-bit), I've installed both Java 32-bit and 64-bit, Minecraft 1.2.5, then I set Java to allocate more memory to Minecraft: http://www.minecraft...o-java-windows/, and then I installed OptifineFine HD C2 Multi-Core:http://www.minecraft...and-much-more/. So far I've only done this on my laptop, I havent even got to the steps where I do the same thing for my fathers laptop or even tried connecting to my server with his yet.
Personally I don't believe OptiFine should have anything to do with this issue, my brother has had servers running before and I have been able to connect to his with OptiFine without issue, but his servers wern't trying to do it over LAN either.
In my Minecraft Server properties file I made sure to leave the ip blank and set it to offline mode, but those dont seem to make any difference. Any advice that might help me out?
Try using Direct Connect in the client to connect to "localhost". If that works, try to connect to it by your private IP (from ipconfig or network properties).
If localhost works but the private IP does not, you have a firewall in the way.
Do you have the Mac Firewall enabled? Does it have weird settings? Is there another security suite or something you might be using?
edit: Also, I noticed you said you installed both the 32 bit and 64 bit jre. You don't want both - you might try removing both, then re-installing the 64 bit version.
Thats strange, because I've had multiple places say to make sure both are installed if you use both 32-bit and 64-bit version of your browser, which I do, and that you should install the 32-bit version first.
Otherwise I do not have any Mac firewall installed, or anything besides the default Windows 7 built-in firewall. But that shouldn't be the issue as it usually asks if I want to block or unblock somthing as soon as it sees the connection attempt.
Update: (1 hour after initial post)
Well I've tried another approach by attaching my old Linksys WRT54G router between the two laptops.
The router is not connected to the internet, and attaching both laptops to it automatically disables the wireless internet connections.
Went into router options with '192.168.1.1', went to 'applications and gaming' tab and set it up to forward the 25565 port for the ip address of '192.168.1.100' which is what the IvP4 got automatically set to after connecting to the router.
Having set that up I went into the server properties and set the IP to '192.168.1.100' and I still cannot connect through my own laptop or the other laptop.
I just don't know where I'm going wrong.
Update: (another hour passes)
After some more investigating I think this problem has to do with the "Internal exception: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out" error that I get when trying to connect to my own server. Usually when this error shows up I also get a notification in the server window about the connection appempt disconnecting.
I tried searching for a solution, but most places are instead filled with people saying they have the problem too or someone just saying that the "Server is down" which isn't much help when you are the one running the server and you know it is running.
Can anyone give me more information about this error?

Correct. You rely on both 32 and 64 bit versions of your browser? If not, keep it simple and stick to one version. It's an easy troubleshooting step. Not being able to connect on localhost and the error you're getting (too long to connect, right?) are odd, so I'd give it a try just to eliminate it from the things to try....
Port forwarding isn't necessary on the local network. That's only to forward ports from the external network (which you won't have with the config you want).
I would suggest you leave the physical networking arrangement alone for now until you sort the issue with the server the way it is. It will make it slightly easier to try to troubleshoot if the configuration isn't changing. Once you get the server working, you'll need to set up an ad hoc connection over wireless or assign static IPs to the Ethernet network or use a router in the middle like you mentioned. That's all separate from getting the server itself working, though.
I'm Trying To Use LAN But Do You Need a Minecraft Premium Account To Do Lan??????
In server options, you must set the "ONLINE MODE" to false.
This makes it such that one does not have to be "online" or using a premium account. And so cracked versions can thus access your server.
I am also having a problem. I have internet but my brother does not do to age. I would like the server to be ran on my computer, but in the end it doesnt matter. When ever I attempt to join him through local or IP It says conection refused. I turned off his fire wall but thats all I know how to do. I'm also not using any kinda of link for the computers. I figure Computers are more advanced then the DS and they can connect without internet. So please help me.

I think the issue you'll run into there is that only one of you can play at a time, which will defeat the point. Unless you have a cracked server and/or cracked clients? From personal experience, I know that the launcher may allow you to log in after multiple unsuccessful attempts to log in (i.e. authentication server down?), but when you try to connect to an online-mode=false server, it will make your accountname "Player" so you'll get disconnected when another "Player" tries to log in. We tried to go this on my LAN server when the MC login server was having issues one time.
Connecting two computers together directly with Ethernet is no small task. I would recommend getting a cheap router and sticking it between the two computers so they get assinged an IP address, you don't need an Internet connection for this.
i found some servers and i press join server and the it saing to me :faild to login invalid session ( try restarting your game)
and i cant join any other servers
can you answer me whats going on?
thre is two reasons this would happen either youre logged into minecraft on another computer or youre using a cracked client. make suer youre not logged into any other computer or your account hasnt been compromised you can change your password and info on minecraft.net. if youre using a cracked client then there is nothing you can do. cracked clients can not play online on non cracked server buy the game or find a cracked server.

In case anyone, like me, comes to this thread after a google search to try to figure this problem out, here is the solution I found elsewhere:
1) The official Minecraft support solution to the problem is "run a server in offline mode if you want to do this". My source for this is here: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-69562
2) If you prefer to not run a server due to the extra load or lag etc, then you can get around the problem by setting the Launcher to use an older version. I have found that Minecraft Version 1.7.4 works fine without internet connection, in offline mode, connecting on the LAN.

First of all, you must have a really cool father to play minecraft with you :D.
I hope this video helps solve your problems.

Thats how old the thread is. Can we not bump it?
If you have a similar problem, It's best to create your own (detailed) thread.

Check out this guide for making a minecraft server without a router or anything like that.
It worked for me in 1.11 so it should be good for any future versions.

By the way i'm on Linux (Ubuntu) so it works on there even though the guide id for Mac and Windows.
