Hey guys, I'm planning to start a server (Bukkit) with about 20 slots. Does anyone know any good server hosting services? I'm willing to pay $10-25 (US currency) per month. And can you also explain how it works and how it stays up 24/7? Can I install plugins from MY OWN computer? Do they host it on a computer or online? I'm new to this, sorry. Thanks guys for your time!
Nobody's going to help you if you're a smartass about it. A lot of people that run minecraft servers couldn't tell you how they work, but I do know a good way to find out. You see, you're at a computer right now, connected to the internet.
Fill in the blanks.
Beastnode has some pretty good rates from what I saw.

I didn't mean that in a sarcastic tone. I just wanted to know if I could install plugins from my home computer, or if it's just a plain vanilla server that I have no control over. Like I said, I'm new to this.

Oh, I must have misread your tone. I never messed much with servers run from a home machine, but going through hosting sites it's pretty simple. You'll want to get Filezilla or some other type of FTP program. Your host should give you FTP access to your server (It's a slightly different IP to access through FTP for me, not sure how it is for others) which will allow you to mess with all the server files. One of these files is 'plugins' which you drop your plugins in. Typically you'll restart, it'll generate some configs which you may or may not edit. 99.9% of the plugins work right after that restart, but if you edit the configs you'll need to restart the server, or more appropriately, reload the config or the server. /reload will reload the server which for some can cause problems, but a lot of plugins come with commands built into reload just that plugin.

You can get 18 people from Beastnode for $10 a month, it's what I'm doing. It stays up 24/7 because it's running on their tower/hard drive not yours. They have a great FAQ section and livechat to help you with any questions, but I can give you some help.
One of the programs they (and I) recommend you install is FileZilla. It will help you transfer files from your computer to the server location. When you've bought the server they send you an email with the password to your filezilla server and a password and username to your server console, AND your server ip.
The server console is located at cp.beastnode.com, and once you've logged in you have total control over your server.
FileZilla will help you transfer any plugins over, and I recommend you go to bukkitdev to look for them.
Lastly, download a program called Notepad++, it helps you edit most of the plugin files (which are coded in YAML)
Any more questions, just ask!

I highly recommend them, $5 Per Gigabyte of Ram, Free MySQL, 24/7, and you can also get 40 players, for $10, they are the cheapest hoster out there, and I absolutely love them, they're incredibly fast with support response, and are very helpful, I haven't experienced any issues with them, no lag, no downtime, no issues at all, like I said, I highly, highly recommend them!

Also another good place to start would be the approved host's section, every host in that section has been verified as a registered company so at least you know you are dealing with a legitimate business: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/131-minecraft-server-hosting/
After all the struggles of trying to find a good hosting company I think its finally here. I got my server about 3 weeks ago and hope to have the server up soon! Wish it wasn't taking so long but school is important. Hope to have lots of cool plugins and see everyone there. In the meantime if your looking for a good hosting company please I recommend http://www.minecraftnode.net
I took advantage of their 6 month limited time offer package and it runs like a charm. I didnt understand at first some basics of the server but the staff was awesome with helping me. If this is not the right place to post it sorry for that I just believe they deserved a positive credit for their hard efforts!
Can you explain to me what I asked?
