so glad to find this topic!! I am not alone anymore!
Same question here!!!
Using iPad 1, cannot update iOS anymore. (iOS5.x)
was playing well,,,, only before the latest update (ver. 0.11.1)
It just stayed on the very first Mojang screen, then back to home screen.
The same version works well on iPad2 iOS 6.X, iOS 7.X and iOS8.x......(with WIFI on as well!)
Just NOT anymore on iPad 1!
But will try suggestions above...(turning off WIFI...although this means this device cannot be connected with others for now...but hope this could give my frustrated autism boy a bit of comfort....he plays this game everyday for 30mins with me and other family members using different iPad connected with WIFI....he was heartbroken when the game failed to open up after update yesterday )
(if not supported anymore, at least you should give a BIG NOTICE so that I could choose NOT TO UPDATE....)
My son's iPad is also having this problem - it is 1st generation iPad, with iOS 5.5.x - according to Apple it has the most recent update. The freezing issue started after he downloaded the 0.11.1 update, before that it worked fine. As others mention, if WiFi is turned off the game works. However if WiFi is on, the game freezes after a few seconds. My kids like to use the WiFi in order to play in each other's worlds, so without the WiFi the game is not as much fun.
Same issue here! Both the iPad and Kindle work fine but my son's iPod will not go past the Mojang screen! Would not have updated it if we had known this would happen. Does not matter if the wifi is off or on, still doesn't work. Sad boy and disappointed mom here! Hoping there is a patch for this issue very soon!
We're having the same issue. 1st generation iPad running OS 5.1.1 - playing MCPE just fine. UPdated to MCPE ver 0.11.1 alpha and problems began. We can't play it at all anymore. Sometimes it hangs on the 'play' screen, sometimes it hangs on the 'worlds' list screen, but it always freezes before you can play it now.
If I put it in airplane mode AND disable local network play, I can get it to load a world - but then in hangs a few seconds later.
Please help. We love this game and play it everyday. Well, we DID play it everyday..
I'm having the same problem when updated mine craft to v 0.11.1 in iPad 1 v 5.1.1 and iPod iOS v 6.1.6, with wifi turned on and off. Both presents Mojang screen, and after some seconds come back to default screen. When double click main button, I can seen the mine craft icon, as running application. However, if I click on it, it happens again the Mojang screen for some seconds, and over again.
Delete and and reinstall helps ?
They cant loose all worlds already built!
Thanks for any support. Shouldn't this issue be opened in the official Minecraft support website ?
I've found a work around for this defect in the application. I've had the same issue on my sons iPad and since I'm a software system engineer found a work around you can try. It deals with faking the software to think it's connected to the Internet but not, than switching wifi on. This deals with minecraft locking up on start up. Anything you do still won't help which includes, reboot, restart of game, etc. I'd hope the application developers schedule a software patch soon in the next release.
Steps:
Turn OFF wifi
Load the game and select Play.
Youll notice the the saved games are active but not connected to the Internet.
Double tap the iPad home button and navigate to the iPad wifi setting and turn it ON while the game is still running.
Double tap again to return to minecraft game and select the world although the game shows its not connected it actually is.
Select the game and it should load the work as normal.

Had to uninstall all patches and mods to get mine to work on my iPad.
