I recently (last sunday) bought minecraft java edition on my laptop but whenever I want to chat or command in a multiplayer server, I always get the same message:"cannot send chat message".
I've tried to change the chat settings by changing it from "Chat: commands only" to "chat: shown" but this doesn't help. I've also tried to redownload the game in case there was something wrong with the files but no succes again. I've logged out, shut down my laptop and waited but nothing seems to help. I'm really at a loss here since there is nothing else I can do. I am however able to talk in single player. I don't use any mods and I'm using the latest version of windows 10. Can somebody please help
Is it a vanilla server or a modded/plugin-based server? In the latter case, it may be that the server plugins dealing with the chat do not support the new microsoft accounts. Ask the server admins.
Thx for the tip I forgot about those settings. I got it fixed now so thx. I apparently changed my xbox account settings to something very strict when I created it. One of those settings was allowence to my chatlog. If there was no allowence there was no chatting.

Are you using a Microsoft account to login? If so check your online settings in your Microsoft account or contact Microsoft support.
