This happens on Vanilla Minecraft 1.16.1, with no client side mods or texture packs.
I've had this problem once before and it fixed itself without me
doing anything about it, one day I could just join the server I wanted to play
on.
What happens is: the client hangs or freezes (Not responding) after
clicking the join server button. The ping bar on each server's row never
finishes loading when this happens.
The error shown on the launcher is: Game crashed. (An unexpected issue occurred...) Exit code: 0
The game is using the appropriate Java version (64 bits)
I've disabled what was suggested to be disabled in Microsoft's help page which was to uncheck a box on Discord that allowed it to overlay onto something else.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft.
I'm not using a VPN and only have Window's Firewall up.
In addition I've tried launching Vanilla using MultiMC Launcher, It also throws the same error code,
although previously it showed a different one once.
I hope someone can help me and that it doesn't require me to run an antivirus or a similar suggestion, thanks!

There was no malware found but I did remove 5 files for Chromium (bit.ly and other search bars, not malicious, but I don't have chromium)
And, it's still pinging endlessly, hanging and not letting me play :c
Do you mean the current launcher doesn't throw the error logs the way it used to do before Microsoft bought it? Has anything else become less user friendly? I'm worried about them changing the game too much.
I don't have the Java versions those launchers require, I think I'm getting too old and busy for this
Thank you, I'll try that when any of these two launchers actually launch, neither of them do, and I've installed a bunch of things I really didn't want to have to install :c
So, none of those 2 launchers work, after having downloaded java and tried to troubleshoot compatibility, It's late, I'm tired and hungry I better go cook.

Thanks, I am, I also tried to launch it on TechnicLauncher, and it actually launched the game once but, I can't get it to launch again :/ TechnicLauncher stays loading on the first (blue-wrench logo) screen.
The official launcher still hangs exactly in the same way it has been lately, and the latest log remains exactly the same as well.
I couldn't test the old launcher, it tries to download the launcher pack and stays there, I even downloaded it manually from the address it shows but it didn't help.

I guess I might as well give it a shot :c Thanks.

Post a HijackThis log https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/java-edition-support/2425225-how-to-get-a-hijackthis-hjt-report
ok, I'll try that, thanks!
I don't know how to post it in a spoiler or box so I did a pastebin
bump
See for known incompatible software: https://minecrafthopper.net/help/known-incompatible-software/
I already had checked that list, and I had disabled the Overlay feature on Discord.
I had not used the VPN in many months, I just uninstalled it, it didn't help, I still can't join multiplayer.
I don't have any of the other programs as far as I know, did you see any that I didn't?
Try to join a server again - after that crash, go to %appdata%/.minecraft/logs/
and add the latest.log

You can test it with the old Launcher:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.exe
Or another Custom-Launcher like Technic Launcher:
https://www.technicpack.net/download

The native Launcher has a build-in Java version - for other Launchers you will need an own Java Version
https://www.java.com/en/download/
Just install it and test these Launchers again
I'm trying this right now, the thing is, I don't remember how to set the java path from the launcher, I had not used Windows for many years!
I had not had time to do this until now before washing the dishes and cooking dinner...
Edit: I already had the java version where that link directs me, but I'm trying the one for the TechnicLauncher first.
You can do it in your minecraft profile
Go to Installations - edit profile
At Java path set the directory to the new java installation to javaw.exe

Try Minecraft 1.16.4.
