I was able to get older versions of Minecraft working (specifically 1.5 and lower) by manipulating the options.txt file that had previously been causing the game to crash upon startup. However, I have a new issue that I cannot seem to figure out - I can neither start new worlds nor open any existing ones.
I receive this crash log every time, almost immediately upon either trying to open a world or start a new one. Now I have researched and found that others have had this issue before, but from what I could find, they are able to start new worlds just fine. I cannot do this, and there is no session lock file that I can find if there is no world to begin with. I have already tried removing the session lock file of the existing world(s) - no luck either.
I am playing these old versions in a separate game directory, and I wonder if the launcher has anything to do with why it will not load/start worlds. I suggest this because I have an old copy of my .minecraft folder from 2015 stored on a USB that I tried to launch from. It used to work in 2015 (I was able to play and load old worlds), but today upon trying that, I am getting the same error.
EDIT: I cannot load an old world even in 1.11 using the custom directory. However I am able to load it if the world is in the default directory. So I must be doing something wrong there.
I have a powerful laptop, and am not convinced that is the issue:
LP series? Not my style! Video series? Closer, but not quite. Survival journal, maybe? That's better. Now in Season 4 of the Legends of Quintropolis Journal (<< click to view)!! World download and more can be found there.
Where is the custom directory located? This sounds like a file access permissions issue; the game is attempting to create a session.lock file but it can't due to not having write permission so it crashes (I've always created my own custom directories as a sub-directory of the .minecraft folder without any issues).
Also, old versions do not correctly use custom game directories since they were not written to use them, so they should be run in the default directory and newer versions run in custom directories instead:
MCL-1394 Custom Directory not used when using old game versions (it is ambiguous whether they fixed this due to being marked as "awaiting response" but the root issue is that until 1.6 the game didn't have native support for custom directories. Some comments say it sometimes works but other times it doesn't so it is best to use the .minecraft folder; another comment says the game crashed when creating a new world, which sounds like your issue, though no specific error was given)
Thanks, this seems to have worked well. I have made a stray observation however that new versions will still download to the default game directory even if I have selected a custom one. I went ahead and made a separate '.minecraft2' directory for the current/latest versions, but the launcher still wants to download those to the regular '.minecraft.' I don't know if this is a big issue or not, but I wonder how to tell the launcher to download versions to my selected directory?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
