[p]Let's try a full reinstall quickly:[/p]
You may need to reinstall the locally installed files that Minecraft puts into place. To do so, press your Windows+R keys, type in %AppData% at the dialog, and press Enter. In the window that appears, open the .minecraft directory, and delete everything except for the saves directory that you see therein.
Next, go to Control Panel, and click on "Uninstall a Program" (may also be called "Programs and Features"). Then, right click on the Minecraft entry and select "Uninstall". Afterwards, restart your PC, then download and run the .msi at https://minecraft.net/en-us/download. Then, try running Minecraft again.[/p]

Copy and save your current /.minecraft folder (to the desktop, rename it minecraft-old) and delete everything in your current /.minecraft directory. Install a completely new Minecraft to the /.minecraft folder.
Let us know if that works...
If need be we can help you add existing worlds to the new MC version.
1. Open and make certain you can create a new world.
2. If attempting to migrate modded worlds to a new version all mods must also be installed and functioning in the new launcher.

It will be possible to replace the new launcher with your existing launcher version if all else fails. You will be no worse off than you are now!

Hi, I did that as you specified (in fact, I deleted the /.minecraft folder itself) but when I install it, it sends me to the old launcher.
If it can help, here is my launcher log (found in the .minecraft folder, after I deleted it and I reinstalled the game)
I think it has something to do with this:

It probably has nothing to do with your problem but; I just updated my Java(build 1.8.0_241-b07).
It is possible that an outdated Java may be a part of the problem.

I thought that too, so I updated Java as well. No luck. My build is the same as yours.
When I download and install minecraft, the .msi file downloads an old version of the Minecraft launcher (1.6.93).
How do I force the installer to download the current version, and why is it downloading the old one?
Are you downloading it using this link? https://launcher.mojang.com/download/MinecraftInstaller.msi

Hi - thanks for the reply
I did that multiple times, to no avail.

Sorry, my friend, I've exceeded my level of expertise.
Is this where you are attempting your download? https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/
If not try replacing EVERYTHING in your current directory with what you get there.

If the above doesn't work there is an alternative listed, give that a try please, but ONLY if the above does not work.
This is about all the assistance I can provide for your problem, and I hope someone more knowledgeable than I am helps you.

Yes, I downloaded it from the link you provided.
However, I'm not sure what should I replace, in which folder (.minecraft?) and with what.
I thought that too, so I updated Java as well. No luck. My build is the same as yours.
I am not? I'm on Windows 10 x64. What makes it seem I'm in Windows Vista?
Yes. For some reason, I was in Vista compatibility mode. Disabling it completely solved the problem.
How could you get that I was in compatibility mode from that line?
Anyway, thank you so much! Thanks to everyone who helped me
